Hello reef folks,

My tank has been running for about 9 months. I recently noticed what seems to be a very smooth solid white formation on the live rock. It appears to br spreading.

Also, in another area of the tank, I've noticed smaill white spiderweb-like things on the rock.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

tanks,

Without a picture we can only speculate. I would think the spiderwebs are either a type of sponge, which is nice, or a vermetid worm...also a good thing. They may look kind of messy, but they are beneficial. The white stuff...well, we need a pic, it could be white coralline algae, which either means its dead coralline or new growth. Either way all of these things sound normal. Did I mention you should post a picture? :jester:

I in for a vote on a sponge (for the smooth white gizmo). I speculate that they may be more common in new tanks. I recently started a 10G nano and took some rock from a 20 year old tank - I noticed something like that on on of those rocks this week. The curious part is that I didn't see them when they were in the other tank. I suppose it could have come from the cup of live sand I got from the LFS, but they did not show up on the rock that came from the same place. Boggle.

my guess would be maybe a sponge or a tiny feather duster, the white string stuff could possibly be a spaghetti worm?
