Without taking into account the outside environment, what do you think would look better on a 48'' by 30'' wide tank - Corner overflow, back center overflow, or an overflow on the side wall?

how about an external overflow somewhere on, or across the back so you see nothing inside of the tank?

I voted other, not sure if it is glass or acrylic. It sounds like a custom tank however, I would try to go external overflow. If you can't make that work I prefer center back if it is 3 sides viewable.

Offset center. I had LeeMar move mine over about halfway between a corner and center for a different look. I then grew zoanthids on it and the back wall so its not even apparent unless you are looking for it.

I mentioned something similar in chat yesterday. A coast to coast external would be my first choice, I think center overflow would provide the best flow and water circulation inside the tank on a 3 side viewable.
But if all we are worried about is aesthetics, side overflow because you wouldn't see it at all from the main viewing panel.

I'm for a coast to coast, that's what I have on my 24 x 48 tank. it's really nice and quite. Only thing I would have done differently is make it internal, instead of a added on external overflow like I have.

Without taking into account the outside environment...
IMO it totally depends on the outside environment with regard to tank placement in a room. If it's going in a corner, I would put the OF in the corner that's not viewable, etc.
I agree that the placement of the tank in a room makes all the difference as far as over flow placement.
