View Full Version : Salt & Water Again about storing?

I'm getting a little tired of making up a new batch of water for every WC. So this means I'd like to store it in a 5G bucket or even something bigger, like a 10g. If I can do this I'm sure I'd be more inclined to do my 2x weekly WC's
For whatever reason I'm leery of storing water. If I do this do I need a pump AND an air stone? I know there will be some evaporation so do I just top it off?

What I've done for the past few years is store all my water in a Rubermaid trash can (40g). I use a small pump to keep the water moving, I have never tried an air stone, maybe someone will chime in and tell us both if thats a good idea.

I normally use an aristone in mine - and don't use a pump (mostly because I seem to use them all up for other stuff). I always mix 24 hrs before use. I used to see pH problems years ago if I didn't do this. Maybe the salt mixes we have today do not suffer from this. I will use freshly mixed salt in an emergency.

You really WANT to give the batch 24hrs for ph to stabilize with the ambient air, not completely necessary but desirable for sure. I have let water sit for a month with a very small pump just to turn it over, no problem. I use garbage cans to mix salt, but I have about 200g total volume you could still make a "can" once a month and yes the easier a job is the more likely you will do said job.
Out of curiosity, why twice a week? Small tank with no skimmer, or real high bio-load?
