Who has them, how long have you had them, how many times have you tryed them? Have you ever fragged them and then they dwindled away? Ive fragged, gave them away, watched them melt, tryed them many times.

I got a frag from a friend over a week ago. 4 polyps. Placed em mid level and they looked terrible. Moved them to the sand and they are all open and look great. No melting no problems.

They are a bit fussy. At my peak I had over a 100 polyps. But there were times where they would receed. I always felt I was successful because I had enough to weather the recessions.

I got pinched for space a couple years ago and decided to cash out of the ppes. I probably should have kept at least one rock of them. I only ended up keeping a few polyps where they had grown off the rocks and onto my main rockwork. Now I only have one single polyp.

Here is one of the three rocks I had a few years ago.

People would kill for a colony like that.

I just got my first frag of PPEs after years of reefing. So far so good but it has only been a week or so. I have wanted some forever but never got em until now.

I've tried them several times, they will last for up to a couple months only to eventually melt away. It's very frustrating because it is my favorite....I will try again when the new tank settles in a little more....Nice picture Jim, one of the polyps that really look good in mass.

Got ours a year or two ago. They didn't do much for awhile. Just this last 6 months or so they have been growing very well.

the only fussy coral i have i swear! this thing was at 1 polyp, went to looking like it was going to bud out 3-4 more, the whole thing closed up and it looked like chewed gum on a frag plug, it close for almost 2 month and now this past 2 weeks one of the polyps (in a different spot) fully opened up now and is at full polyp size and taking mysis. so i started with 1 poylp in the beginning of august and it is now mid december and i am still at 1 polyp lol.

Thanks for fixing that pic Kevin.:)

Thanks Rick, I hope to get a few different rocks going. But I hate cutting them. You just never know and these things can get in bad shape quickly.
I did cut a frag awhile ago and lost it as it blew away in the tank, but I was fortunate to find it the next day. It's doing very well. Hopefully will get a new home soon.

After Christmas i am going to try them again.. i have my tank setup different to keep the nutreint levels down so hopefully they will thrive..some for all my other Z's and P's ae doing great. Im also doing alot of reading on most all the polyps im keep on my reef.

These guys seem to do best in low flow areas. Lighting doesn't seem to be a big factor. I have these up close to the top maybe 6 inches down under 250 14k hamilton. But the frag was open and looking good at the sand under a 175 xm 10k.

Tried em multiple times; have lost a few and saved a few. Currently have about four frags with 2 to 4 polyps per. I've found that in low flow they close up and melt away. I've gotten most stability from polyps placed in indirect flow from powerheads in the bottom 6" of my tank.

I think currently there are two kinds of PPE thats in the hobby.

1. That grows fast , but color is not as intense and the mouth dosent pop as much

2. Grows slow , very touchy feely , but color is intense and mouth slit pop

The first variety gave about a baby or two every 3-4 weeks. The second one gives one baby every 2 months and closes up on me for couple of days if I move it.

I would agree with this statement as well - The old school PPEs are the very slow growers, and even for people with very stable systems, they only get a new polyp rarely. At least one of my colonies is the old school variety. I've had it about two years, and it has four adult polyps and a baby. I got it with two polyps.

Do you have pics of both ?

It would be interesting to try to see the differences under the same lighting.

Yes, I think i have pics of both. At one time I had both now I just have the old school one.

I will dig for pics today and see if I can find some.

I started with 1.5 polyps of the PPE and after one year I have 5 polyps. Some people have had better luck but still a slow grower over all.
