I just got this about a week ago and I noticed this today. The flesh coming off this one spot and a small area on the other side. Everything else looks good on it and it ate like a champ this week. Is it in trouble or does it do that when growing/splitting.

just curious: Are you dosing any vodka or micro bacter?

Generally not a good sign. But since its new it may just be adjusting to your tank/ showing signs of damage from transport. I would suggest making sure that no other coral is stinging it, no fish are nipping at it and continue to feed a little bit of food every couple of days.

No I'm not. We transferred from a 46 to this 75 last week.

Ok. I'll keep an eye out. The rest I got from that shipment seem fine. I fed it for the first time last night too. I'm a little stumped. thanks for the info

With my cyclosirus(plate coral) when it showed skeleton I fed it well and it grew back over the exposed area. Feed it little bits (easy to digest) daily untill you notice it healing up.

+ Keep it away from chalices and acan echinadas.
Feed it regularly once 4-5 days. Medium light and low flow.
If you see that the tissue loss is increasing then there is a possibility of pest. Incase of pest the loss of the coral will be rapid, more like overnight or in two days.

Could it be sand irritating it? My goldenface goby drops a lil sand on it everyday. I'm going to move it and see if that helps. Thanks again everyone for your input.

When I moved it I saw a lite bit of sand where the flesh is coming up. I shook it gently to get it off and when it came off some flesh was kind of stuck to it so I'm almost sure it was the sand being dropped on it. I hope it comes around. The tear goes to it's mouth.

Just a quick update. It did eat last night and no change good or bad on it's flesh as of yet. It does have a bit of a saggy look so some parts of it's flesh if that means anything. I took a couple more pics today to show a couple angles that I'll add in a bit.

I used to have several of these. I had the same issue eventually with all of them.
In addition to everything else recommended, run some fresh carbon, maybe some phosban, and generally keep up on water quality. Not sure that's the issue, but it never hurts to improve water quality.

Thanks for the info!! I have some rodi being made and I'm going to do a water change hoping it will help.

It has got worse but i think we know the cause. We think it's one of the emeralds. My fiance found one on top of the palm polyp frag n I found my greenstar frag ripped up. I'm going to try and get them into the sump. See if things get better.

there is some debate with phosphate removers and some types of corals like tracks because they simply need phosphates to servive. full water perams? and anything you dose or use in your system? sand is ussually never the problem because their tissue pushes it off, im thinking the only reason sand fell out is because there want tissuse there when the goby spit sand on it.

I do have phosban in but i'll try taking it out to see if it'll help. I have 4 other trachs that are having no issues at all. I don't know if it was my emeralds but i'm trying to watch carefully.
As for my perams on 12/10/2010:
trates - 20
phosphates - 0
kh 9dkh/161.1 ppm
calc - 560ppm
amm - 0
trites - 0.2
Ph - 8.6
This was recently after I set up our new tank.

ok fist off you calcium is to high and should be around 430 ish. the other thing is if skeleton starts to have algae growth on it, it is most often best to remove the infected area if no sign of improvment shows(this can save and kill the coral so i like to wait until it is a must)

I know the Ca is higher than it should be. The new tank was just set up about 2 weeks ago and I've done a water change a couple days ago. That will change in time but doesn't have anything to do with the trach. Thanks though.
As for the infected area, how exactly do you remove it? knife, dremel, chisel and is this ok outside of the tank?
Thanks again!

a very fine toothed sawblade the smaller and thinner the better and i dip them in restor by brightwell after to help regrowth.

AWESOME and Thanks! I've been wondering how to do this if it got worse.

Since the trach is losing more flesh and the bone has a bit of brown look to it on the far end, i'm going to attempt to frag it. I'm hoping to find what I need to do it today. Wish me luck! :(
