here is another project i decided to do..i wanted something i could sit on my desk while im chatting here and look at instead of having to turn 180 degrees to look at my tank.. The tank is a 2.5 rimless but with sand and liverock i could only squeeze a little over 2 gallons in it..it has a hob filter modded into a macro fuge with culupera in the chamber..i finished the aqua scaping today and used livesand and water and rock from my 15 gal..(had to much in there anyway)..i have a green weed zoa in there to see how things are going in the tank..and its starting to open up..this is going to be a zoa and ric tank..im going to put a blackray shrimp golby in there and thats it..

Here is the aqua scap of this lil tank.

What did you use for the LED lighting?

i used a little fixture i seen at menards..for 20 bucks i thought why not try it..it need a little more blue so i got so some blue ones coming from ebay ..i still need to do the short stand its going to sit on and the small canopy for it to mount the leds to then its grow in time,,

Jamie
thanks so much if it turns out half as good as your 8 gal i will be pleased..still not sure if im doing the contest yet..i want to but cant find a id some a couple of zoas for the price list..

Sir Patrick

Im not sure on the ric garden yet until i get the blues put in..my zoas are liking these lights but my rainbow ric isnt liking it very much..so we will see once it get used to it. might just be a zoa garden.

Did you get the 12v pre wired ones? That is what I used on the 10gal and it worked out really good. I wish their was a way to show what it looks like but led's mess up pics. I had thought it would be up just for the contest and my experiment but I like it enough it might find a permanent home on my desk.

whitetiger61
01-15-2011, 10:21 AM
yeah they are 12v there are 30 lights total..i got some blue leds coming from ebay to give it some more blue to make the colors pop more..i might even get 1 more to put under the canopy ..

Just found this thread and I love the idea to use those lights. I have seen them too and wondered if they would grow coral. Even if you don't do the contest this will be pretty cool to see if they work. Will it be easy to put more blue in that fixture? Is it easy like changing other lights? Nice rock scape you finally landed on. I think I changed my rocks around about 10 or more times till I got them just so! :)

yeah i got the blues in there..tank looks great..it lights the tank just not bright as a pc or t-5 lighting would do, but so far the corals seem to love it..they are open and their colors are amazing.. I will post a pic after sunday when i get my final corals in there.. thanks for the compliment..

well i lost my heater in the pico this morning or last night..not sure when but the corals were not happy so corals got moved this morning until i have the funds to get another one..not working for a couple weeks really puts a strain on the wallet..hopefully soon it will be back up and running again.

Just remember someone else that had a 2.5 acan tank and after a wile the acan's on the top started having problems from too much light.
Just hate to have it happen again.

my rock work isnt up that high..top of the largest rock is like 4 inches from the substrate.. plus im getting ready to put led's on it and hanging them high..then slowly lower them as the acans get used to the lighting

just a quick update..acans are doing very well..i put a ric in there for something else to look at..i need to get some more snails in there for a clean up crew, but so far everything is looking great...future plans for lighting include putting a par 38 light over this tank..

Rick

2pairs
07-29-2011, 09:33 AM
sounds like a plan, just keep lots of room to raise the par 38. I have one 3 feet above my sump and it is hard on corals that aren't at least 6 inches down from the surface.

whitetiger61
07-30-2011, 08:10 AM
will do..jolson has a 3 bulb light setup i might try..just not sure its going to be enough light..

Rick

07-30-2011, 08:35 AM
that is the setup that was too much light for acans in his 2.5 gal but he couldn't raise them any further.

well it doesnt matter he sold them i see..lol back to the original plan..
