Thread should read 35g hex (read on to the bottom if you wanna know why . . . basically I went by word instead of math my bad!!)
I really love all the info I have been gleaning from CR. I just got my first corals yesterday Thanks Happy Coral (http://www.happycoral.com)! so I figured I would post some pictures. I wish I could put this up on that "baby reef" section (having trouble w/ that). I guess somthing I see ya'll do is put your tank specs. So here we go with that

35g Hex (glass) Live rock and sand added end of November, BakPak 2R+ skimmer (with some active carbon I rigged up in there) 3 el'cheapo powerheads like a 50gph & 2 35gpa, 250watt MH light (diy style), heater. . . thermometer  oh yeah and like EVERY test kit you can buy of course :fish2:

And the live stuff: 2 clownfish (occys still in qt for now jic), blue legged hermitcrab, brittle star nubby, 3 bumblebee snails, like 10ish ast. snails, 3 nas. snails, green bta, 2 ric (really hard to photo them), some purple spotty orange zoa, frogspawn, purple Idaho grape, blue strippy mushrooms, green/blue sps, sun coral & couple rock nems, and an ugly clump of cheato. By the way I love taking pictures and have been saving for an SLR for a while now, so that said my pictures are pretty crappy with my pas camera, taking pictures of the aquarium is REALLY FRICKEN HARD (sure you all knew that) So far I am loving this new hobby!
-thanks for looking! -

Hello Heidi, Your tank looks great! However I would recommend removing the green plant looking stuff in the last pic of your first post. It is called caulerpa and is actually an algae. It will grow out of control and out compete your corals. Once it takes hold it can be extremely difficult to get rid of. I am just trying to help head off a problem before it becomes a serious problem.

+1 to getting rid of the algea! Looks nice now, but.....

This your first tank?

Heidi
01-09-2011, 08:33 AM
it is kinda pretty guys, imo, is it something I can control by cutting back (like you would any plant) so it just stays there on the rock? OR is it gonna show up other places not just where its shoots are? Does it compete for nutrients? Just a few questions I am new to this so thanks for the advice. -Heidi

That green stuff is caulerpa. It will take over your tank. It is extremely good at up taking nutrients. Many people use it in their refugiums. But unless you want a tank full of it, I'd get it out. If it is on just a couple rocks that you can get out, I would remove the rocks for now. Just picking it off, likely won't work to get rid of it. What will happen is with lights going on/off, it causes it to go sexual...and it will release spores in the tank to reproduce.

+ 1 on the algae, lol. You can pull it but it leaves little hooks in the rock. Also if you are going to keep it, instead of cutting (which releases some not so good chemicals) you would/should pull out strands of it hopefully without ripping it.

Cute little green bta. Where did you get that at? I am kind of worried that in an immature system that it wont make it. They are something that should be placed later. SPS too really but if the rock was fresh and aged in another system you may be able to pull it off.

Sorry, dont want to dampen your enthusiasm but some general rules are best followed.

Thanks everyone! Yes I am looking forward to the meeting next month. I got my gbta at petco in Kzoo. It was only $20 so if it doesn't make it lesson learned (there are differing view points on placing different critters in your tank but I have talked to some people I know and trust and choose to go with their opinions). Also here is a picture still not the best I know, of my clownfish. They are really entertaining to watch, do some very bizarre things to/with each other much cooler now that I have a pair :)

So I went to a wonderful fish store today in Jenison MI Blue Fish Aquarium. Wow first of all those folks run a beautiful business!! The staff was so nice, I had my 4 kids in there and no one acted annoyed, which is a rare thing really. It was very clean, relaxing atmosphere, and when I can put fish in next week I think I will go back there and shop :)
hahaha MY POINT:
I was looking at some of the tanks in there for sale and thought wow my "50 gallon" sure looks SMALL. . . (the tank was given to us by someone who wanted rid of it and He told us it was a 50 gallon)
So when I got home I made my mathematically inclined husband do some geometry to find the gallon volume of the hex . . . guess what people I think I have a NANO lol its a 35 gallon. So my thread name which I tried to change is wrong oh well. So I am a little freaked out now I can't really put everything in there I wanted. Plus I have been doing 5 gallon h20 changes which is 20% a week not 10% so I hope that wont wreck my chemistry. Well 35 gallons may be smaller then I ever wanted I know that I was saving money for a 50 gallon because I really wanted to start this hobby out easier. :stupidme: bigger = easier it seems. And some of the fish I want to keep need more then a 35 gallon so eventually an upgrade will be in order oh well.

Heh, I was thinking the same thing... though the snow does tell that story! For a second, I thought you were across the street. That house out the window looks eerily similar to my own. But, it is not.

It's a great looking tank. And, blond or not, the lampshade idea is clever.

Well I rearranged some stuff yesterday when I got my new little 450 nano pump, to help pull the water up more and keep a good "whirlpool" flow. One of the ladies at the fish store convinced me that another 750 would have been too "hard core" for the hex. I listened, which I do sometimes. :) The flow is perfect now IMO. I got 3 fish yesterday and all are doing well. The 2 pj cardinals are eating and doing their thing in the qt. (I wasn't helped much at the one store so I didn't trust those little guys gonna need to watch them and copper them for a few weeks) A fish that I have wanted from day one Yellowheaded Jawfish or pearly jawfish I bought this guy too. Please excuse the pictures as he is really fast and only comes all the way out when no one is standing right there at the tank. Mostly I get what you see in the second picture a mouth full of sand! He had been at the pet store for almost a month because someone was going to buy him but didn't, plus I trust this store a lot, hopeful it wont turn out to be a big mistake. I really wanted to let him have the sand right away so he could burrow and i keep a bare qt (easier to clean etc.) Time will tell :fish2:
I moved some things around because of the "new flow" and for ascetics. My husband says I just can't keep my hands out of there, which is mostly true. Enjoy the pictures and thanks again for looking!http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/IMG_1203.jpghttp://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1446.jpghttp://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1445.jpghttp://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1438.jpghttp://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1441.jpghttp://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1444.jpghttp://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1439.jpg Oh yeah almost forgot, Me and my son got to watch our blue legged hermit change shells today! I had 2 shells in the tank for his future homes. That litle bugger picked a dead snall shell pretty ugly one too the ones I had in there were too nice I guess lol  The whole process took about 20 mins, very neat to experience!

Miz, I am feeding them freeze dried shrimp I have to feed my nem. I have been breaking them up into tiny pieces and thats really all I have had success with so far. I want to get them on the spectrum like the other fish but I think they are mostly carnivores so we will see how it goes. They definitely eat the pods! The little there where in the 5g qt are pretty much gone or hiding in the big chunk of cheato.
Any one can chime in here if they have a certain food they recommend for the cardinals, Thanks!

Here's a good shot of the Mini maxi its come out into the light now so you can see all the colors better:http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1557.jpg

I started some small experiments with my tank lately:
Last week (1/31/2011) I started dosing vodka. I am just adding .5ml per day @ night about 1 hour before the lights go out. I have read and asked a lot about this so thanks to everyone I have bothered ;) I am going to try this at this amount for a couple more weeks and see if I can't keep my phosphates @ zero. I am starting to notice some growth on my sps frags and they are starting to get more color (they look more like they did when I got them on the tips (the color I mean) So I will let you know how this goes.

Yesterday I started topping off with rodi h2o that is dosed with pickling lime. I was noticing that my cal was dropping a lot during the week (I do weekly water changes) Also my KH has gradually dropped since I set up the tank. So I will let ya'll know how this goes after a month or so.
Again thanks to everyone for your knowledge and experiences that I have both gleaned from your threads and asked directly. I love this forum btw :love3: :embarrased: :)

Well today I got my "pre-skimmer" from aquacave. It is made to fit over the intake pump kinda makes it an in tank overflow. I love it within 5 minutes of being in, there was NO nasty crap on the surface of the water. I have upped my vodka dose to 2 times a day totaling 1ml. I am kinda watching for some of the green tank glass algae to stop growing so fast because my phosphates & trates and trites are reading zero, but I know there has to be some cause I gotta clean the glass every day. All my coral looks good including the zoes that I thought were gonna die they are making a comeback. I hate that I can't take any good pictures of my sps frags they have color now but I can't capture it with my crap camera. I guess ya'll will have to wait till they get bigger as all of the color seems to be on/in the growth. All fish are fine, pj's are getting along better lately. So here for your viewing pleasure: it's a work in progress!http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1580.jpghttp://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1581.jpghttp://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1584.jpghttp://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1585.jpghttp://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1586.jpghttp://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1595.jpghttp://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1594.jpghttp://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1590.jpg this last one is how all my fish now react when I open the screan to do anything  you would think I was starving them!! :fish2:

Prob where that type of algae is coming from-any kind of direct daylight will do it. I had same issue at least until I moved it. Before that I covered the area where the light was coming in.

Nice clown photo. Mine at one time had there sleep spot very near to the top. They would swim around the outtake pipe, and I could hear them splash at night, also yes my tank has always be covered.

How's the tank going Heidi? Still liking the macro algae?

Heidi
02-16-2011, 09:26 AM
Thanks Marc!

Yeah, Nate: I still dig the micro algae, It pretty much stays right there in that spot because I pull out the little runners. I took the cheato out for a while (used it in my qt) but put it back to try and lower the nitrates. It is funny how people get very upset about the algae, I saw a post on RC where there was a ton of bubble algae covering the rocks around some acans, It was prob the only dark green in the tank, it looked really pretty IMO. Then later in the tread he pulled all of it out (came back a couple weeks later) He had a very beautiful tank! All the coral looked so happy. LOL it was a 35g :) . . . a trend?? Only thing is when I leave for a month this summer some body is gonna have to babysit that tank! The algae, the feeding, dosing and nothing is automatic, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it I guess.

Miz: I guess this will finally inspire me to pick out some window treatments for this huge picture window (3 windows really) It's about time!! We have lived her for almost 4 years and painted ever room when we moved in. I hate making window decisions, made all at the old house cause we built it, so I think that burnt me out. Now I guess I will have to take the plunge ;)

Bubble algae or aka Valonia is a dangerous one. The algae in that tank will keep growing, faster than the corals, and overrun the corals and deprive them of light. That's one of the main dangers of keeping macro algae. Even in my tank I have to prune the algae away so that it does not take over the coral. I lost 2 beautiful montipora colonies that were quickly taken over by algae. One thats pretty and I haven't had get crazy is a red bubble algae. Also check out the Chlorodesmis genus, a really cool good hair algae.

Heidi

All is well with the tank! I stopped dosing Limewater until I come up with a better way to do it. (It needs to be added really slowly as to not upset balance in the tank with the ph and stuff, and I was just dumping a little here a little there when I topped off. I am stopping that now until I do this next thing. . . . I did a water change today, and took a step back and sawhttp://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1622.jpg
and asked WHY don't I have a sump again??

So it is tiny a 5.5g i use to mix water and heat it for water changes. I am going for it. I am turning that little tank into a fuge. Stay-tuned for some DIY people! Here are some pictures of some new stuff enjoy! I hate how stuff looks only half as bright as it looks in real life in my pictures. :duh: OH well best I can do for now.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1627.jpg few new zoas I have a couple more I haven't glued on yet, and TONs of babys from the blueish/purple one in the middle.http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1630.jpg Stick of yuma :) Bought one have 5 babies on the stick!http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1631.jpg Proof of life (lol thats a joke  ) It has doubled in size since it split, hasn't moved and keeps getting darker, but it is like brownish green not bright green so hopefully it will be green again someday. People said it looked very bleached before when it was a lightish green, maybe it isn't green at all we will see.
More to come on my crazy idea!

Well it's seems time for an update on the little hex. I think pictures speak louder then words (even when you have a crappy camera) so I will just post a bunch after a quick word here. I got my awesome screen that Jimflies made me a couple weeks ago so that rocks. I still am doseing 1ml of vodka a day and that is all for right now. It has made all my coral very colorful and I have had 0 phosphates and nitrates for over a month now. My skimmer is working great finally! Big shout out thanks to the dude from CPR on here. I emailed him a month or so ago telling him how "lame" the pump I got w/ my skimmer was. ONly filled half the chamber, it was loud all that I didn't like. Well he sent me a new pump an Acella one now its like 280gph which the old one was supposedly 200 but there is no way it was actually running that. The chamber is full of bubbles the output is making waves on the surface and I have to empty the nastiness ever 3 days it fills up with thick nasty crud. ITS WORKING! I have been filling this tank up pretty fast w/ what seems to do the best and is kinda my fav stuff SPS. I have 6 larger frags I am growing and 3 colonies. The colors in them just get better and better its crazy to think I must be doing some stuff right. I am also working on a nice little mixed zoa rock garden when when grown out is gonna be pretty cool. Oh yeah there's the fish . . . I went away last weekend, and before you freak out and call the Tang Police, read this whole thing please...
My hubby and kids knew I wanted a tang really bad, but I hadn't bought one cause they get too big for my little 35. Well while I was gone they took the liberty and went to chicago and bought a yellow tang, plopped it right in the tank. . . NO QT  SO I freaked out, in the nicest way I could I didn't want to hurt their feelings they were all so excited and "its just a little one only about 2 inches" . . . yeah, no they grow HELLO!! So I calmly explained to my hubby that I couldn't keep this fish in there until November which is when I was going to "build" a new 100+. So he said well, go ahead and do it now. WHAT really so I am in the process of picking out a tank and will start a tread when I get it, I think I have finally made up my mind as for the dimensions (thanks everyone for all the silly chatting etc, really it helped and I will be picking a shallower tank then originally had thought) So lets cross our fingers and hope for, no ich and a quick (in the next couple months) new tank for my "little" yellow tang. He is a very happy guy, loves the macro algae I let grow and seems to have made himself quite at home in a hurry. Oh and here are those pictures I was talking about :fish2: ENJOY!

I have run out of room on top so I made this little fraggle rock DIY hahaha to stick my few frag plugs in. I just took some of that el'cheapo rock you find at petsmart for marine aquariums and drilled about 6 1.5inch holes in it. Hopefuly it was algea up soon its WAY too white :) http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/heidiiliff/DSCF1678.jpg
I feel like I need to borrow someone's good camera so I can actually photograph what I see.
Thanks for looking

Looking good, you're really packing it in there. Looks like you need a magnetic frag shelf.

Haha yeah, he offered to help. We might take you up on that, then ya'll can see it in person. I told him I was buff, but he was like . .. "yeah but your like 90 pounds buff, not 200 pounds buff" WHATEVER that means  I am worried now I hope the guy has more then just him there to help load it into our van. OMG I am SO excited!

Moved the furniture around to accommodate the tank, you know your a reefer when . . . lol
