I have a seperate 35 gallon Hex, Seahorse tank. I'd like to create a tall pillar in the middle of the tank. I did so already, but the smaller rocks in the upper half of the pillar simply fall off. I was now planning to use plumbers putty to try and connect the rocks and stablize them. Do you think this will be strong enough? Were not talking large rocks here, the bottom most rock is roughly the size of two good size fists and progressively smaller to the top piece bieng half of fist or smaller.

drill holes and use a fiberglass rod to slide through them all.

That sounds like too much work ;) Most of these rocks are far too small to drill into and would likely break upon trying. I could try glue, but I'm not sure that would work much better than putty.

Putty will work, just give it plenty of drying time and make sure you get the two parts good and mixed.

Also, FYI, drilling rock isn't hard work - not if it is true LR, its pretty soft. I personally use the bottom portion of plastic coat hangers rather than acrylic rods, which can be hard to find.

I like the coat hanger idea. Acrylic rod is hard to find! I used very small diameter pex pipe. Plastic coat hanger would have worked much better! I like to fill the holes with 2 part putty, then insert the rods. Holds a bit better.

Henry- I am going to give the harveys a try!

I was able to get away with just "dry stacking" my current rock pile, but I am going to be making a much larger reef when my new tank arrives. What is the process with this Harvey's ((plumbers putty, I assume) ?
Do I need to allow for a significant cure time before introducing livestock to the tank if I use an adhesive like this? Of is it safe from the moment it sets?
