#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Bought a new piece of coral yesterday-- brought it home andput it in the tank (after acclimation)--in the afternoon when I went to feed the tank-- I noticed a hole on the side of this coral with something coming in and out of it-- after watching and watching-- I thought the hitchhiker might have been a mantis shrimp-- never experienced one before now-- went online-- sure enough the eyes and body are unmistakeable-- I decided to go ahead and pull the coral out before hedecided to relocate and bore a hole in something else-- pulled out the coral and put it in a bowl and tried to use hemastats to pull the sucker out-- it was so scarey-- he fought me all the way- he didn't seem afraid because he kept sticking his head out-- thenwhen he would attack the hemastats-- you could hear the clicking noise-- the whole thing was pretty crazy-- finallyI got him out of there-- it was a major battle though--The coral seems okay-- but you can never know for sure-- sometimes they get tissue trauma and slowly recede and die-- but I am just glad I got the mantis shrimp out of there . . . How common are theyas hitchhikers-- don't really look foward to dealing with that again . . .pieces of the situation are videotaped-- I got some pic's too-- I will post later-- if any of the pic's are good.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

When was this exactly? Once more? All of them? Not many people express themselves the way you do.

I've had to get rid of 3 mantis shrimp in a 2 yr period or so. They seemed to be very common in the live rock i was getting.
I read one way to get rid of them is to pour soda water? i think soda water. Just water with CO2 carbonation in it. They come sho0ting out of their holes b/c they cant breathe. Problem is, you kill everything else similiar to him, sucks.
They make traps, just nothing more than a littel box witha spring loaded trap do0r and you bait it with a piece of fo0d.
Either way, they suck. Will destroy the inside of your LR and kill other inverts, possibly fish. Some people like to keep them in a tank by themselves. The peacock ones can be quite pretty, but they always have a serious negative attitude. Saw one at a LFS that was about 8 inches long, was real co0l lo0kin.
Then again, I read a story about a guy that was messin with one in the wild, and it ended up with him losing his thumb.
GJ on getting him out!
