If you have access to a decent amount say 50lbs or so of Live Rock, with a little patience you can do what we've done, we have access to a LFS that gets in somewhat regular stock of Tufa rock, its very cheap ($1.50 a pound) light and extremely porous (water will run right through it). We just rinse it and scrub it down real good and add it to the tank letting the live rock 'seed' it and it will become very much live rock in short order. In six months or so you won't be able to tell it began it's life as base rock, we have over 200-250 pounds of it in our 180g, all very much encrusted with coraline and teaming with life. Coral have no difficulty attaching to it because its so porous. No more cringing when it comes time to put a hammer and chisel to it to make frag rocks or mounts, unlike smashing up rock you paid big bucks for as 'live rock'.
