#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I'm about to makedecent size LR purchase, and was just reading an article about hypersalinating to get all the mobile stuff out of the rock so you can weed out the bad crabs and mantis shrimp. You then put the good stuff (worms, pods etc) back in your display tank.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#What does everyone do with the bad guys? I'm thinking of buying one of those little 5 gal 'all in ones' from walmart for $35 and having a little house of ill repute. I can't stomach the thought of flushing something that is alive. Does anyone have anything like this set up. It would probably be cool, just a few pieces of live rock with a bunch of crabs and stuff.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Second question. The artical didn't say what the salinity should be to get the stuff to leave the rock? Does hypersalinity mean 1.028 or something really drastic?#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Last question: My purpose for adding a lot more LR to my fuge and display tank is that I'm thinking of hooking another 55gal up to the system (shared water). This one will hold just a single clown trigger (very small to start). I'll end up with about 200lbs of LR split between the main display and fuge, and DSB's in all 3. You think having theclown tank hooked upis very dangerous to my FOWLR display tank?#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Basically all three are display tanks. My 55 fuge isn't a normal "hide it" type. It's set up as nice as my main display except it has no fishbut macro algae.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Would love to hear opininons#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

Sounds like a good plan to me. I've heard of many folks with your suggested 'houses of ill repute' to house things they don't want in their main display, but instead a display of their own, simply because many of them are cool to look at. El-cheapo $8 10g tanks work well for these.
Running all of the tanks together (minus the ill repute one) shouldn't harm anything at all, but will likely help out the entire system provided everything is healthy. We too run a macro planted tank as a refuge, we have both the hidden one with chaeto and the other as a display with all sorts of mixed macros. I just added a pair of snowflake eels to the planted tank, they seem quite content living in a green world.
I can't wait to see what search terms will bring this thread up given your title, should be good for a few laughs.

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#haha.. didn't think of the 'search' thing. Hope it doesn't bring any riff-raff to your awesome boards. My boss always laughs at me because I make the subject lines of my emails silly but on-topic.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#BR#ed_cl#Any idea about the hyper salinity? Can't believe they didn't give a specific gravity in the article. Knowing my luck, all my cool stuff will come flying out of the live rock, and promptly die.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

No worries, that just makes it more fun, I run through the logs pretty regularly, some of the things that pop up are just plain halarious, I'll have to post some of the good ones one of these days.

I believe SG should be around 1.032 or so to do it... if I'm remembering wrong someone will jump in and straighten me out.

Well it only took until yesterday before it showed up in the stats and I noticed it.... Some brainiac did a search for "house of ill repute forums", LOL and came right to your thread, guess it wasn't quite what they were looking for.. but it's ranked at #1 for those words :D
take a look at

BTW how's your 'HOIR' coming along?

that is right on the salinity you want it between 0.32 to 0.37 and as far as housing them a lot of the people I talk with put them in their sump or fuge. I have a couple of gorilla crabs in my fuge. I have a beautifull peacock mantis that came with some TBS rock and I have him in a species only tank but for the most part you can put them in your fuge and they do fine.

#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#That is hilarious. I can't believe someone went so far as to use those search terms.. dunno though, maybe it was a young teen who saw the words in a book and didn't know what they referred to.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I know all about the search logs though. I used to do websites (back in the early days).. and my business was based out of Savannah and one of my clients had the word Jameson in their name. Nobody admit anything, but most of you know what will happen with the words Savannah and Jameson in search engines. It was always embarrasing trying to explain to my clients why they weren't ranked higher.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#BR#ed_cl#As to my new project. I've hooked up the 3rd 55gal to my water system, so far the only thing in it is the DSB. I borrowed some sand from my fuge to help spread some life. It's been running for about a week, when I get some free time I'm going to head to Salty Critters and pick up the big supply of LR. I'll probably set up the 5 gal " HOIR" a few days before then, just in case something bad comes out when I do the hypersaline thing. Who knows, maybe if I get enough cool bad stuff, I'll set up another 55gal for them. It'll be a " BAWLR" tank... "bad ***es with live rock".#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#BR#ed_cl#I honestly don't know how you guys do it with the 90+ gallon tanks. I have a hard enough time moving 55gals and putting stuff in them. Do you need a snorkle when you rearrange your LR??#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

Nope no need for a snorkel, I got an Angel that does it all for me
:) She's the only reason we have anything more attractive to look
at than a big pile of rocks... but with the tank 24" deep, she's soaked
to the shoulder plus...#ed_op#br#ed_cl#

oh yeah this hobby doesnt even get interesting until you get above fifty gallong (just kidding) I am in the project of a 500 gallon total (300 gallon show with a 100 sump & 100 gallon fuge) Am in the early stages. This is going to be a wall project. I am waiting for the contractor to get the prints done so I can send them off and get the tanks built. I will post logs and keep you updated. Wish me luck
