Mr. Microscope's JBJ Picotope

Hello fellow Captive Reefers!

I've been in the reefing hobby for about two years now. As of today, my three gallon JBJ Picotope is about sixteen months old. I'm very excited by this forum. As a member of several other forums, I'd admit this one seems to stand out above most others. Okay, enough flattery. Let's get down to the tank.

I've found keeping a pico tank to be incredibly fun. It's not quite as difficult as one may think. These small tanks come with their own set of issues, and have very different problems than regular reef tanks or even nanos. Stability is probably the main challenge, but many innovations have developed in the last few years that make pico tanks entirely possible to keep in the long term.

This is my first salt water tank and I'd say I owe any success to lots and lots of research and patience. It seems every time I turn a corner there's something new to learn in this hobby. It all started a few years ago. I received an Amazon gift card from my sister for my birthday. I've always loved aquariums, but my wife really doesn't like them. So, when I saw the picotope online, I knew that I could keep this at work with no problem. After I figured out that I wanted to do a reef tank, I spent a good two months researching each piece of equipment and making the most careful decisions I could before taking the financial plunge.

Since then I've experienced plenty of downfalls, crashes, death, and destruction. I've certainly come close to quitting once, but I just kept up with water changes and research. Today, I'd say I'm very glad I didn't stop reefing. This hobby has really brought about a sense of pride and excitement to my life. It's amazing what a few gallon of simulated ocean can do for one's well-being.

Wow!!! Nice little tank!!!

Gotta love colonista snails, especially in a tank this size!! Very proportional, eh?

How high are ya running the Par38 above the tank?

Mr. Microscope
02-27-2011, 12:45 AM
Thanks! Yes. Those snails are the best!

The PAR38 is at least 18 inches above the waterline, but that's going to change very soon when I finish my new LED light. You can see a pic of the PAR mounted above my tank in my DIY thread.

I'm not sure what kind of toadstool it is, but the polyps are white and the body is more or less a light brownish-pink. Not the most colorful addition, but I really love it from a shape standpoint. I think it looks like some sort of exotic mushroom (not marine type). It was one of my first corals and has survived every stupid mistake and unfortunate mishap during the life of this tank. I can tell it's aging well because I haven't seen a slough in a very long time, and it's been looking particularly happy since I started feeding it live photo about two months ago.

Hello All,

All of my recent hype has been about my new LED's, but there have been plenty of other changes going on with my tank as well.

To start out, here's the obligatory FTS:

http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab321/Mr_Microscope/FTS_20110311.jpg
The tank feeding has been going very well. I'm dosing live phytoplankton from Reef Nutrition, Coral Frenzy, and frozen cyclope-eze followed by larger water changes. Additionally, I moved my heater down to a temperature of 76! Since then, I honestly haven't needed to clean my glass. I've literally had NO green film build up on the glass in weeks despite the heavy feedings. I really think that lowering the temp has made the difference.

Here's a fun video of my CUC hard at work after a small feeding:

BusyCUC.mp4 video by Mr_Microscope - Photobucket (http://s876.photobucket.com/albums/ab321/Mr_Microscope/?action=view&current=BusyCUC.mp4)

I traded my colony of Crown Royals. It took up way too much space in my tank and the long skirts were irritating a lot of corals. I think they caused my EZ's to melt. In return, I got a small colony of Ked's Red's, some grees palys of some sort, and a Kenya Tree frag. The Kenya tree frag is also a bit too large for my tank. So, I might get rid of that as well.

http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab321/Mr_Microscope/ZoaGarden20110311.jpg
I also met a local reefer who gave me some Pink and Golds and some Pulsing Xenia. That has been one of my favorite recent additions. I let it sit on the sand bed until it held onto something. Then I put it up on top of my cone rock. I caught my first glimps of it pulsing on Friday. I'm hoping it eventually gets to the point that I saw it pulsing in the previous owners tank. It was way faster than mine.

Here's a vid of this my first signs of pulsing. Note: all pumps were off during this video. It's doing this all on it's own.

I'm sure you noticed in my FTS the big frag rack on the right side of the tank. This is my new MR3-S frag rack that I ordered from blackrockreef.com. I really like this thing. It's filled up already with frags from the Crown Royals, Green Implosions, Magicians, Ked's Reds, and a few others that are starting to come back to life including my Bam Bams and Zombie Eyes which I thought were goners a few months ago.

I've been experimenting with the taking pictures with the new LEDs. Having the dimming option on things really makes photography much easier. I just pumped up my neutral whites a little and was able to take images clear as day without the blue washout. However, I couldn't resist capturing an image with the royal and cool blues. It seems that green is almost the only color that the camera can pick up under those conditions.

The green palys are called Green Implosions. I've had them for almost 2yrs. If you don't mind a little advice on them, keep them culled back. They're very fast growers, invasive even and they irritate other corals.
I culled about 50+ and they're growing back just as fast.

Those are, Green Implosion palys. Beautiful for sure but very fast growers. Invasive even and they do irritate other corals. Keep them culled back as I do and you'll just love them. They prefer low light. In higher light they tend to turn somewhat brown.

I love love love them! Especially the dimming feature, and ESPECIALLY the long long life of these suckers. When I upgrade, I can reuse every bit of this build from the LEDs to the Drivers and power supplies.

Cool! I'm a zoa/paly nut. So, I knew what they were before they hit the water, but I didn't realize they'd lose color under higher light. I figured the opposite. Perhaps they act like Purple Deaths. I'll keep an eye on them. Thanks MizTanks!

BTW, did you ever notice your Green Implosions getting a single white line going from the center out? I've seen this on a few of my polyps and then it seems to go away the next day.

Sure have seen the white line-not only that at one time I thought I had a morph because within a bunch I had one that was all white, yahooo! Not! Within a couple of days it turned green.
Yours may do better color wise under those LEDs, mine are under cf's.

Holy Bananas!!! Yes, that is the white line I'm seeing. They've been occurring and receding since I added them to my tank. Those look amazing! Kinda like a people eater of sorts. I hope I can get mine to morph like that. Thanks for sharing!

You should post that pic to coralpedia and give them a name. Maybe something straight forward like Sparkling Green Implosions, or perhaps a little more theatrical like Sir Patrick's Coat of Arms Palys.

What kind of lighting did you have them under and how intense? Did your tank experience some sort of event that might have sparked the morph? How long did they take to change?

If you would like them to morph in this way, just acclimate them slowely to very intence white, or 10k, lighting. Eventually they will develop the strong white line, and will speckle shortly after that. Just be carfull not to move them fast, or else it will be bad on them.

They already have a name- Green button polyp. Green implosion, and a couple other tags these polyps have been labled with are really just morphs of the common button polyp.

I had them in an 18" tall tank with direct light (10k) 175w MH lighting. At first they were shaded, then indirect light, then full direct light, about 15" under the lamp. That pic is from about 10 years ago. Its an old favorite of mine.

Brief but important update:

I've always had problems with my corals shrinking over time, and recently I thought that I had it pinned down to not feeding them. Everything was looking healthy, but I've started to notice a change in my Magicians in the last couple weeks.

I normally replace the chemi-pure 4 times per year (I always use a half unit), but I noticed the shrink started after my most recent replacement of chemi-pure at the beginning of the month. It's taken me the life of this aquarium to realize this since the change is so gradual. Today, I took it out my Chemi-Pure Elite.

I'm going to be monitoring things for the next month to see if it turns around. This hobby never ceases to confound me with the subtlety of changes that occur over time. I guess this is one of the greatest challenges of reefing...patient observation.

To start out, here's a few FTS's.

Comparing all LEDs and just the Blues:

http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab321/Mr_Microscope/FTSwb20110408.jpg
I feel like I'm getting better at adjusting the royal blue images to get an accurate representation. The greens really turn out well, but the challenge is with the reds. The camera can't really pick up the pop I'm getting on my warmer colors which really are amazing in person!

Here's a fun video of the tank:

IMG_2579.mp4 video by Mr_Microscope - Photobucket@@AMEPARAM@@http://vid876.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid876.photobucket.com/albums/ab321/Mr_Microscope/IMG_2579.mp4@@AMEPARAM@@vid876@@AMEPARAM@@876@@AME PARAM@@ab321/Mr_Microscope/IMG_2579@@AMEPARAM@@mp4 (http://s876.photobucket.com/albums/ab321/Mr_Microscope/?action=view&current=IMG_2579.mp4)
I've been feeding a good amount of phyto and the GSP is loving it. I even target feed this colony and the polyps close up on the phyto and come open back up again begging for more. Here's an update on their progress. (RB/CB LED's)

http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab321/Mr_Microscope/GSP20110408progress.jpg
Just for fun, I took a few images from the sides of the tank. Here you can see the M3R rack.

http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab321/Mr_Microscope/otherside20110408.jpg
And from the other side. I like the depth of field in this one:

http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab321/Mr_Microscope/sideview20110408.jpg
Here's a neat video from a similar perspective. You can see the xenia pulsing like crazy here. The driver I had on my white LEDs blew out, and I had my tank under just blue LEDs for a couple weeks. After fixing it and putting on the whites for the first time in a while, the Xenia went crazy and pulsed all day long, faster than I've ever seen!

When I was taking this shot, I accidentally took this one. I was about to throw it out, but I think it turned out pretty cool.

http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab321/Mr_Microscope/Crazysideview20110408B.jpg
Here are a few highlights. These were taken under just Royal Blue and Cool Blue LED's. In the bottom left, you can see the trumpet that I got a while ago that bleached. It has gotten most of its color back and is plumper than ever. The Organism palys (upper right) have drawn back to the rock and are no longer stretching. The Green Implosions here seem to be maintaining their deep green better than the ones up top that are getting more white stripes (no, not bleaching, just morphing a little). Whammin' Watermelons and Tub's Blues healthy as ever are in the lower right.

Finally, here's the rack with just blues, and all LEDs:

http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab321/Mr_Microscope/rackbw20110408.jpg
Maintenance update:
Since taking out my Chemi-Pure Elite, everything seems okay. I guess it's too soon to say if it's better or not. I'm definitely having to clean the glass more frequently. That probably means that there's a lot more nutrients in the water.

Also, I stopped doing the heavy feedings and 90% water changes. Mostly because it's been too much of a PITA to do at work compared to just 4L which I can brew up in a large beaker. I'm still feeding 250 microliters of live phyto once or twice a week and some Coral Frenzy. All feedings are targeted for the most part.

As I mentioned before, one of my BuckPucks blew. I had to order a new one and replace it which took a few weeks due to personal business. I've heard from several other sources that BuckPucks are known to be unreliable, but for driving such a small amount of LEDs with dimmers, they are really the only option. For example, I have just one LED on one of my drivers. I don't think that can be done on any other drivers out there.

Finally, I went to the Manhattanreefs Frag Swap today. I definitely got some goodies (and I won a few!!!). More updates to come!

So, as I mentioned in my last update, I went to the Manhattan Reefs Frag Swap last Sunday. I guess I'll share my spoils.

For starters, I picked up this little colony:

24K ZOAS!
http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab321/Mr_Microscope/24kzoasBW20110412.jpg
These are my absolute favorite zoa at the moment. I can't believe I found some. The seller was calling them, "Yellow Brick Roads", and I was like, "...sure...okay, I'll take those, *ahem* Yellow Brick Roads.. :naughtydance: "
He sold me like $300 worth of zoas for..well, lets just say less than $300.

I also picked up these Eye of the Strom zoas. They're kinda nice.
http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab321/Mr_Microscope/EyeofStorm20110414.jpg

Finally, a local member sold me this little SPS piece for $5. I thought it was a Stylo and so did another reefer that I showed yesterday, but the seller thought it was some sort of Monti. Either way, I like it and it seems to be doing okay so far.
http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab321/Mr_Microscope/MontiStylo20110414.jpg

At the end of the day there was a raffle. There were people throwing hundreds of dollars worth of tickets into the various bins there. I actually went to the swap with the sol purpose of the possibility of winning an RODI system. I really need one of these so that I can start a reef at home. Well, I put my few tickets into the RODI bin and sure enough, I WON! I got a 5 stage RODI system from airwaterice.com. I think it's the Extreme Typhoon.

On a smaller note, I won a battery powered air pump. I saw there there were hardly any tickets in this bin. So, I thought what the heck. Now I can build an ATO that lasts longer than a couple days.

All in all, it was a fun day. I saw a good talk by Tony Vargas who is coming out with a book about reef tanks around the world and saw some cool corals. I have to say the zoa and acan selection wasn't as good as the last swap, but there were a lot of cool clams and plate corals. I'm looking forward to the next swap.

One more thing. I noticed this awesome brittle star in my tank the other day while I was feeding. This has got to be the prettiest one I've seen so far. I love the stripes. He's also considerably larger than I've seen in a brittle star.

Looks like you hit the jackpot, got some sweet coral and won a raffle.
That is a big micro brittle star, the full sized ones can get much bigger. I had one for years that grew to about 12 inches.
So with a RODI are you going to have a bigger tank at home or another Picotope? From the looks of this one I am sure what ever you decide it will be well done.

I've been working out the details on my second tank for at least a year. I'm planning to do a small cube. Mr. Aqua makes a nice 18 inch 25 gallon cube, and they just came out with a low iron version. So, it'll either be that or an Elos Mini system (17 inch, 20 gallon cube). If I go with the Mr. Aqua, I'll be drilling it and adding a hidden fuge/sump.

With either system, I'll be DIYing some LEDs for the lighting. I'm also planning to spend a fair amount of time on the rock work. I'm want to create a pillar with dry rock and an acrylic rod. Then, seed it with some LR and letting them cure for a while while I'm building the LEDs. I really like rockwork, but I also want to have as much sandbed as possible. Hense, the pillar.

Here's sort of a sketch I made a while back:
http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab321/Mr_Microscope/18InchCubeRockandCoralPlan.jpg
The ring of zoas will be done with just one variety of zoa. I was thinking perhaps Tub's Blues, BamBam, or maybe Blue Hornets. The acans are sort of a CUC for food that falls to the bottom. I also want several plate corals to aid clean up with the acans. Once the system starts to stabilize, I'll do some sort of garden on top. Perhaps SPS. After the tank really matures (1.5-2 years in), I may attempt some NPS in the shadowy areas.
Here's a 3D mock up I made in SketchUp. I couldn't really find coral models that worked for this and the rock certainly won't look like a birthday cake on a stand, but you get the idea. As you can see, I would like to do a pair of clowns and have them from as small as possible.
http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab321/Mr_Microscope/25cube.jpg
