Okay, I'm convinced. I'm going tomorrow to buy a 10 gallon tank. I'm also going to buy a heater and filter for it along with PVC for the bottom. A thermometer and I guess that'll do it for my beginner's quarantine tank. My display tank is only 20 gallons and it is still has to cycle so what do I do about the water for my quarantine tank? Anything else I should know or purchase?

I would let your tank cycle and about a week before your ready to add fish start your quarantine tank. this will give your QT a week to stabilize. and then you should be allright. that is what I didi with my tank anyways. I filled my QT half full with water out of one of my tanks that was allready up and running. and then filled the rest with fresh saltwater.

What do I do with the quarantine tank when not in use. Do I leave it running or do I clean it out? I read this from the liveaquaria site so I'm kinda confused... How do I disinfect my quarantine tank?

Tanks and equipment can be disinfected between uses with a mild (2-5%) Clorox solution. Make sure all traces of Clorox are rinsed off before re-using. Drying also kills many but not all aquatic pathogens. Make sure to have a separate siphon for your quarantine tank and disinfect it as well between uses.

What filter do you recommend for the tank. I have a skilter 250 in my main tank so I don't know how a spongesetup would work out, any ideas?

Clem,

as far as filter you can use a bsic sponge filter for this tank. and if it sits idle between fish for a while then yes you can tear it down and set it backup if you wish. A quarantine tank is a very basic set up. but it is one of the keys to a healthy and successful show tank.
