New tank setup..water quality

Thanks for the information to my previous post on sand, lighting and skimmers. My next question is on water. I understand that it is probably best to buy a RODI setup, but can I use tap water for the initial fill up to get the cycling process started or must I have RODI or distilled water to start. Also if I have a household water softener setup is this the same or as good as a RODI setup?

For start up, I have used tap w/a good conditioner and ran a phosphate sponge with no real appearant problems.

you will eventually want to go with a RODI unit. I think youshould be allright with tap to start.
