Okay, so I didn't get the lid on my salt bucket tightly, and now it's 
hardened into a lump. Can I just break this up and still use it?

Yes you can, but to be honest it will not mix up as well as it did 
before,  It might take up to twice as long to desolve, and there is a 
better chance that some of it will not completely desolve.

Had a similar experience with a bag of IO salt.
The weird thing was that the white bag turned very yellowish.
No idea why.
Used the salt anyway and everything seemed ok.
