IMO, your problem could stem from several different areas... please
explain your water source, feeding habits(how often/how much), your
bio-load(fish), and your filtration. I suggest replacing the fluval
with a sump/refugium and adding a skimmer if you don't already have
one.

My water source is tap water, but i have been looking into a RO/DI to
help prevent some of the water imbalances i have, especially if i want
to put corals and whatnot in it eventually. I have a 55 gallon but only
have 1 chromis and 2 turbo snails in it right now so thats probably not
the problem. and i do have a skimmer that i run right now even though i
dont necessarily need it to be running, but it help in water circulation
so i keep it on. And my filtration would be the Fluval 3 so. i am
thinking of adding another hang on filter but im not sure yet and ive
never even thought about looking into a refugium bc i really dont know
much about them or how they work, etc.

Try reading this page: http://www.melevsreef.com/what_sump.html

And about RO water, here's an article that may push you over the edge:

Your tank will benefit greatly from RO or RO/DI water, and you can get
complete setups cheaply on Ebay.

I started out with tap water, and ended up with a huge diatomaceous algae
problem. Can't swing an RO setup yet, but RO water is only 33 cents per
gallon at the local Super Walmart. Definitely ditch the tapwater; you'll be
glad.
