Just got a new 200G deep that needs to be resealed. Just going to try to document as much as I can as I go.

I have some big plans for this and I can't wait to start on them. Wow is this going to be a long process!

4'x3'x27"

The old and new:

Its going where the TV used to be so I have some moving around to do still. The new tank will be moved over 1/2 between where it is now and where the old one is.

Done with step one. Time for a new blade and need to re-strip it (little piece I missed) and then I will use acetone to do a final cleaning...

Found a chip in the glass at the very bottom of the front glass. Hoping it wont effect integrity as it has been like this for who knows how long. (Under the seal)

Maybe this is why it was leaking...??

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_T8MkJkpXtMc/Tcfz1vdO2JI/AAAAAAAAApY/jQNZbcHRQkM/s640/2011-05-09_00-49-29_756.jpg

Could it possibly be a flaw in the glass? I was told it is a starfire front if that matter at all...?

Got the tank cleaned up most of the way. Razor x3 with vacuum in between and then a total of 2 wipe downs with acetone.

Still need to touch the back up a little and tape it up prior to sealing.

After much debate and talking amongst the community, the chip should not take any from any integrity. May have been caused by a flaw in the glass or possibly the glass was not cut smooth enough.

SURGE TANK is probaly a better word there may be some info on M.R. there is definately some on R.C. you fill up a seperate tank above the display with your return water. When the water rises it opens a valve that releases the water in a wave action. The fish learn the pattern and when the wave is ready to come they will dive into the rocks and prepare for it they work great in a big cube just a thought

Nice tank its going to be a awesome tank! and yeah with the tank that big you could deffinally do a nice surge device! and there veryy simple to make and take less energy to run compared to a wave maker timer.

Thanks for the help / advise guys. I will defiantly look into it.

I got the tank all sealed up tonight.

Here is the first seam I did - Used black silicone from AGA.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_T8MkJkpXtMc/TdCdUCTZhtI/AAAAAAAAAqM/ia2pXdV4N40/s800/2011-05-15_20-28-07_312.jpg

---------- Post added at 11:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:45 PM ----------

Gotta love straight lines :)

I did make one mistake that messed up two small areas on different seams but nothing major. I let the silicone dry for too long (~10mins) and I then pulled the tape off. This caused the first layer of the silicone to tear / get pulled. I cut the top layer with a razor blade and reapplied a helping of new silicone over the now uncured lower layer and fixed it. Because I already removed the tape I will need to go over these two areas and trim them with a razor blade - No biggie.

Just a hair over 24hours. Trimmed everything as nice as I could get it (In the two spots I goof'ed on) and checked all the seams.

Everything went well...

Having some other issues with the floor which was unexpected. Working on those issues over the next week or so.

Ordered my floor jacks today. They will be in no later than the middle of next month so I have to wait to move the tank into place and then do another round of leak tests. I never tested it more than 1/4 of the way full, but I have no doubts in the seal.

In the mean time I need to get a 3/4" piece of ply wood for a top to the stand (it is rough lumber now) and then paint the whole stand black.

I also need to order my flexible PVC and start to run the plumbing.

CableGuy

Got my jacks today. Need to get some wood and put them in place but Im moving on the project.

Also, the tank is now in its final resting place.

And lastly, I sold some coral today for a few pennies so I'll be starting my plumbing soon also. Need to order my spa flex. ($$$$) :( :redneck:

Overall I'm physced! :thumbsup::highfive3:

Thanks Heidi! Its going to take a LONG time until this system is up and running...

I want to have the plumbing done by the end of next month.
I want to cycle it with water and rock from my DT after that. Plumbing needs to be done. Tank must be in place and not needed to move.
I am getting anxious and might run it with the rubber maid sump from the 72 to get the tank running. (August-ish)
I am shooting for September-October for a water flow from the basement to the tank with fish in it.

Got all of the parts to my lighting in... (Still need to order more LED's... $$$)

Built 120W of dimmable LED's last night. 60W Royal Blue, 60W cool white and threw them over my 72G just to see how they'd look.

On my 72G, I would need at least 120W of Cool white, maybe even 180W to compare to my 2x250 MH's.

I'm thinking for my 200 I going to run around 360-480W It is 27" deep so it'll need a little more.

i think you would be good with 120 leds.
i dunno how you have it set up now but 4 arrays of 24" heat sinks would give you a spread that can light the whole tank.

i didn't catch if you mentioned it or not but are you using lens's at all?

Well come to find out 120W of LED is stronger as far as par then 2x250 MH's. I had to dial back my LED's for a few days because of bleaching.

The tank held water for about the last 3 weeks 5/6 full with no leaks so we are good to go on that front.

I also ordered 100ft of Flexible PVC last night and 3 gate valves. I will be doing a BeanAnimal drain system and then have one return in the tank and then I'll do over over the back on the other side.

Sweet!

CableGuy

So today I received / bought:

100' of Gray Flex PVC (Via UPS)
3 1" Gate Valves (Via UPS)
2 1" Ball valves
4 1" Unions
4 1" NPT to slip

I need help before I start from the Pro's...

I have 1" NPT threads on the 4 1" bulk heads. (This is where I need the help) I planned on using the 1"npt to slip fitting on the bulkheads, then going into a short ~12" flex PVC where I will have a union and then it will go into the basement where I will have the valves all nicely accessible near the sump.

Here is the "problem" in my head. The opening in the tank if I needed to take out the bulkheads are 1.75", the unions are just under 2" so I would still have to disconnect the NPT to slip still so it kinda of defeats the purpose of the unions...BUT I guess that would mean that it would be a little easier as I wouldnt be turning the entire flex pvc down into the basement and/or trying to to turn the standpipe.

So my questions... is this normal or is there a better way?

For the record, I will have nothing below the tank, besides the union and storage - Everything will be in the basement.

Thanks!

So I made A LOT of progress this weekend!!!!! Might have water in the tank this week or next!

Got my overflows installed, and also built my back of the tank rock wall. Still need to build two small ones for the overflows. (To cover them) I used VERY LITTLE foam and almost all rock. 2.5 cans of foam and about 40-50lbs of rock I think.

I know a lot of you are going to ask about the pumps and how am I going to get them out if I need to. As you can see there is plenty of room in and around the pumps so I can pull them out if needed. I also am leaving room behind the rock wall for various reason, but one reason being to pull the cord through with the plug on it.

Please take notice to my nice silicone lines... I spent a lot of time and effort to make them clean a neat! :):thumbsup::thumbsup:

The power head that is "in the open" will be blocked by a rock pillar to the normal view of the tank.

Moved a large storage rack in the basement where I am putting the new sump and equipment and ran all the new plumbing - FlexPVC. Ran into a few issues as always... ugh! But the pipes are in. I am now waiting on the faceplate made out of 1/2" plywood to dry as I painted it the same color as the wall.

I will be running a total of 3 drains and one feed which I will split an unknown amount of times so I have a total of 4 1" pipes running from the main floor to the basement. They were a PITA to install.:crying: Drilling up into the basement ceiling / floor boards gets tiring. :oldman:

As you can see I wanted to go horizontaly, but because this wall is shared with the bathroom it had some weird supports. It was also a 2x6 wall so that helped a ton!!

I need to do some patching but I saved the piece that is cut out.

Should have water in it this week starting the cycle.

I now need to put the heat on finding a sump and building a stand and table and shelves in the basement for the new setup.

Lastly I need to replace that outlet you see with a dedicated 15A circuit and a couple dedicated 20A circuits down stairs but I'll do that when the time comes to build and wire the stand up down stairs.

Tank is filled about 90% of the way.

Today I threw 4 bags of CaribSea in it.

2 bags of Special Grade Reef Sand (40lb)
2 bags of Fiji Pink Reef Sand (40lb)

I'm waiting on a prop for my mag 24 to come in and once that happens I will have water flowing from up stairs to down stairs.

For the time being, I will be using a 54G rubbermaid tub as a sump down stairs to start skimming as I need to design my sump and build a stand for it. I'm hoping to have the sump done in the next month or two. Yeah... I know... but I will have transferred before then so I wont be running two tanks. :propellerhead:

Thanks Miz! Its slowly coming along... its a mess but an exciting one and starting to look like a tank,

Sweet video Adam! Looks like this tank is taking off!

It is!

I threw my 48" MH's above this tank and just turned on one of the lights (all the heat) to see how it looks.

I moved all the sand around to even it out and it made it a little cloudy again.

No major changes yet.

The skimmer did start to pull skimmate today which is a good sign. It has just been clear bubbles an nothing for a couple of days now so that is a good sign that it is somewhere in the cycle. The rock I used for the rock wall WAS live rock but it was out of the water for a couple days so Im sure it has mass die off while it was out but it will speed up the cycle even more.

What are the red sticks in the sand bed?

What are the red sticks in the sand bed?

The future homes of my rock pillars. I will be using the rock in my 72 with corals attaches and creativilty stacking them.

This mean I will have to take them out and quickly plan on what I want where and then drilling them and placing them in the tank. Should be a fun experience.

Final step of the tank transfer done... :shifty:

All rock pillars

Tall one of the left is #1, then the one with the anemone is #2 and the the smaller one of the right is #3.

You can see some of the red rod still but nothing that is bothering me. It should be covered with algae/coral in no time so no worries.

Thanks Larry :)

You should know as all reefers should that you are welcome to come look at it when ever. The cell phone, or maybe any camera doesn't capture the depth of the tank like it should. You really need to see it in person to really see how it looks.

Not quite yet....

Update:

I walked in the house on Monday to about the WORSE thing next to my house burning down... the tank was leaking...     :shake-head: Luckily I still had the 72 up and running and had to throw everything back in there.

Needless to say I was devastated. I spent hours and hours and hours on this tank. My girlfriend was starting to get aggravated with the 200 even though she really like watching the 72. I was at a loss as to what to do. For about 2 mins I contemplated selling everything and getting out and then into another hobby but I just couldn't do it. :smash:

I have mustered up some strength to go back at it and to see what happened. I honestly have no idea what happened... maybe a hair with a bubble or something? I have no idea. In the picture below you can see the silicone that I easily pulled away with my finger nail.

About 5 mins after I got home. Water was brown from going through the floor and falling back into the sump and then being pump back upstairs. GROSS.

Overflow after 4 days still full... cant say my silicone work is "bad"...

The messy fix --- with a bubble that I already got. I will go back with a razor to clean up.
