In my tank I have about 1-2 inches of sand should i consider adding sand for better bac levels or do you think this is enough. I tried to keep all the sand just to the front of the tank (not under the rock ,but you know how things move. I have considered putting a small barrier up o try and keep the sand forward but that would mean a complete tear down and right now i really don't want to do that.

We have 1-2 inches of sand in our sand bed. Of couse there are a few of our fish that tend to hog piles of it under the rock scaping, so sometimes it's hard to tell how much sand we have in there anymore. I think we started out with 3 inches but I can't be certain. With what we have in our 180g, I'd have to say the amount we have is working fine for us. No real problemson it!

if you want a good functioning deep sand bed I would go at least 4 inches, this gives enough depth to have low oxygen points
#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#1-2 inches is fine. That's plenty to grown enough bacteria. The only reason to use more would be to start a DSB which would have to be at least 4" but preferably 6". #ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#KG#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

DSB(deep sand beds)are usually 4-6" think. The reason for the thickness is to provide the bottom layers with an anaerobic(lack of oxygen)zone.Bacteria that process nitrate can only live in low-oxygen areas.
