There has been quite a bit of interest in the swap so I think it will have a decent turn out. To my knowledge this will be the first swap in the Flint area making it hard to predict our exact turn out. This location should be pretty good, as it will be centrally located for the east side of the state. This will be the first swap of the "season" the last one being in early April.

I measured the hall yesterday and am working on a table layout now. The facility is about 25% larger than the Belleville, MI hall we used last Fall...and that swap was packed...over 200 attendees.

Tables will be $15 for a half and $25 for a full. I'd expect 25-30 tables to be available. We may also have an option for some additional space if we need more.

I was wondering if anyone knows when the swap is scheduled to end? Usually, I don't want them to end, but my first vacation to Canada starts once the swap ends. I'm going to start a thread right now about possibly buying corals while I'm over there if anyone has any helpful info.

jimsflies

We'll try to wrap it up by 4:00 so vendors can be out of the hall by 5:30.

jimsflies

We still have some tables left. I notice quite a few of you selling frags for the swap. Its not my style to shake you down to buy a table if you walk in with more than X frags. So I will leave it at this...the benefits of reserving a table:

1. You get into the swap early for setup. Sad, but true...many of the best pieces are sold and traded before a swap even starts. I can't regulate this, nor do I ever plan to try.

2. You have a place where people can actually find you. If you have arranged pre-sales it is frustrating trying to hook up with your buyers in a crowded swap hall. Having a table will help you complete the transaction...missed people likely means refunding pre-sales money or never getting it in the first place...how many misses is it worth to spring for a $15 half table?

3. You get that peace of mind that you paid your fair share toward the costs of the putting on the swap. (The hall rental isn't free...and I don't get that same peace of mind from completely subsidizing everyone's coral vending. :) )

msumatt
08-08-2011, 08:48 PM
I to was surprised that tables were still left. I just started making frags so would have nothing to sell but once I do, I would get a table, since a single sale or two would make up for the table's cost.

I am new to saltwater and this is the first swap that I have been to, I plan to get a few things mostly zoas but you never know what else might grab you. I have a couple of questions.

1. Do people generally bag them up for you or should I bring my own container/bucket?
2. If so what would be the best container for this event?
3. I have 4 hours from the point of buying to getting them home, is that to long?

Thanks, the family and I are really look forward to this.

The vendors or sellers will bag them or give them to you in a small container. I would recommend a small cooler (or however big you think will be big enough). As long as you don't leave it sit in the sun, the corals will be fine in that. I leave the cooler in the car with me so it remains at a comfortable temperature...not in the hot non-air conditioned trunk. f you think they have a chance of getting too warm...for example if you stop off for dinner and leave it in the car, you could add an ice pack (wrapped in a towel) to keep the temperatures from getting too hot. Four hours should be fine...provided the temperature range is maintained.

MyNemesis
08-09-2011, 12:36 PM
The sellers will bag whatever you buy from them. A lot of people carry a little cooler (like a six or twelve pack cooler) to carry what they purchase. The cooler is a lot more important in the winter to keep the corals nice and warm on the way home. The cooler will help to keep your corals at a good temp for your long drive home and the corals should be fine for a four hour drive. Sunday is supposed to be 75 to 80 degrees, so you probably won't need an ice or heat pack to help you maintain the temperature in your cooler, but that is how reefers regulate the temp. You will absolutely love going to a swap meet. Just like a candy store for all of us. Look forward to meeting you and your family on Sunday!

Scout

Great thanks guys. I will bring a little cooler and can't wait till Sunday.

Just a reminder for vendors...the volume limit will be enforced. The tables for this swap are older and frankly make me a little nervous. If you have a full table, you will need to set up your tank over the legs so as to minimize the stress on the tables. Remember, you don't have to fill your tank all the way to the brim either...please keep weight in mind.

You may also bring your own stand/table if it is sturdy and in good condition. Please let me know if you are planning to do this so we can account for it in the setup.

Also remember to take note of the electrical restrictions. Large halides and heaters tend to be the biggest problems with overloading the circuits. Fortunately heaters shouldn't be a big issue at this swap...

jimsflies
08-13-2011, 11:14 AM
Regarding vendor tables...please note:

Note if you are conducting business other than selling corals or reef related dry goods, you must provide notification of the nature of your business. Failure to disclose could result in your removal from the swap without a refund.

Sharing of tables is not allowed unless given prior authorization. Full tables should have no more than 2 people working them. Half tables should have no more than one person working them. Area behind the tables should only be used by the person who is working the table. Having more people than your allotment crowds the other vendors.

Wow, first time at a swap. I loved it. I thought it was well planned and run. Best time I have had in long time. I am relatively new to saltwater tanks so this was a great way for me to stock up on some corals. Played it safe with just some zoas and a frogspawn. Next year, once my tank is over a year old, I will go for some of the higher end stuff.

Great Job! Well Run! Will Be Back Next Year!
