Larry and Lauras Ocean

Are first reef tank was a 29 gallon biocube. This only ignited the obcession. Following the biocube came our 65 gallon then our 120. Bringing us up to date with our 165 gallon setup. Great Lakes Aquariums built our 72x24x22 tank which sits on their 36'' tall stand. The tank has black silicone and a 1800gph overflow. This tank is built like no other tank I've seen. The quality is top notch with the euro bracing and silicone work. Underneath the tank rests the 75 gallon sump. 48x18x20 are the dimensions with a skimmer, refugium, and return section. The sump has a Vertex Alpha 250 with red dragon pump, chaeto,500 watt heater, and a water blaster HY-5000 return pump. I really love the Reef Octopus line due to customer service and performance. For the display tank we have three Vortech mp40es to help with the flow. Lighting to this beautiful tank is a 72 inch 12x39 watt bulb Aquaticlife T5 fixture.. The bulbs are 2 fiji purple 6 actinics and 4 10k. As for the sump lighting we have one 6500k home depot special.On to the fish! We have three tangs. A powder blue, vlamingii, and a yellow. A mated pair of ocellaris clowns, one standard orange, and a black and white. Our royal gramma and three wrasses. The wrasses are a sixline,McCoskers, and a Lubbocks. And last but not least our manderin. We are going with a mixed reef and there are way to many corals to list. I love my sps, and acans. Laura loves her chalices, zoas and palys. Pictures will be posted soon. And be on the look out for our future projects.

We recently added a 25x25x12 rimless with black silicone from Great Lakes Aquariums. This is tied into the main system for added stability and will be bare bottomed. For a return pump we added a Reef Octopus Water Blaster HY-3000, to assist with flow a Ecotech Vortech mp20. Lighting for this will be a Evolution 120 watt 20k fixture. The Blue Glow will be providing the frag racks for this project.

Update 7/3 tank is having a crash. Uncontrollable ammonia spikes from corals one by one passing. The only survivors are the fish and possibly a few corals. Started by trying to save a few dead colonies to a full on wipe out.

It was a few things Chris. Im still thinking something got into the water. Then the doa colonies triggered a reaction. The skimmer was producing to many bubbles for awhile. So there was something definitely in the water. The tank is recycling as of now.

Do you store anything around your tank or stand? I had a shelf in my old 50 stand above the sump. I kept a few additives on that shelf. On a couple occasions I knocked something off and didn't realize while emptying the skimmer. Fortunately, the lids were on them, but I could see how easy it would be for something to end up in the water.

All the chemicals and food are next to the sump with the lids on. And the kids wouldn't dump anything in the tank. The only thing I can think of is maybe someting aerosol. Will post pics when I get home.

It was the start I think. I thought we could revive them. I still think something got into the water. The way the skimmer was acting is a solid clue.

I am sorry to hear about this, it is the sad part of the hobby. I always take the oportunity to reevaluate what I do, how I do it and make some changes to the landscape. It at least makes me feel a little better.

Just ordered a new cleaning crew to help refresh the existing. We got 15 blue hermits, 15 astrea snails, 5 nassarius snails, a sally light foot, sea cucumber, and going to try two of those cleaner clams in the refugium!

Nice, I will be following FO SHO. What size?
I am thinking of doing the same but I'm still not sure if I want to tie it in to my main or have set it up on its own system.
Connecting it to the main will obviously help with keeping the water stable and cut back on equipment cost and maintenance. But if it's a stand alone frag tank I won't have to worry about loosing both if the systems crashes.
Maybe your tank will help me decide.

Well system update adding a spectrapure 90gpd RODI. Next step im either adding a GFO reactor or a bio pellet reactor. Any opinions or suggestions?

I would give the bio pelets a try, if you have some good alk, ph, no3 and po4 test kits on hand, to monitor what is going on while the bio pellets do their thing.

Why are some of your photo's red, others white and some of the are blue. Kinda hard to get the idea of the real colors of the coral when they are all adjusted and not uniform.

I took them, I worked in Houghton about 3 miles from Larry's and I stopped by with macro lens and shot some pics of his tank/coral. Then we went to Tacobell and ate some grub lol

Well it's been awhile since I last updated my tanks. We have switched from T5's over the main to Radions and a Vega color over the frag tank replacing the evolution 120 watt. I will be adding some photos soon of all the sick lps frags/ mini colonies.

True that!! I had to scratch and claw my way to mine! This coral is a real eye popper when it grows out. Where did you find yours? Got mine from totally exotic of oregan. Nice grab! :oldman:

I got mine from Zack. Its encrusted and very colorful. Blows the ORA blue torte I have out of the water.

This setup was taken down on July 6th 2014. I miss the setup, but we got too big with the frag tanks and main. Between work and school we no longer have time for a tank. However I miss the hobby very much and will be getting back in with a smaller set up. Not sure when we will be wet again.........
