You want to hold it on a Saturday night? Saturday nights are...well people's Saturday nights. Will people show up for it ? Wouldn't a Saturday a few hours earlier...even 5 be better or even a Sunday?

Are you willing to move it to Sunday evening Rick or afternoon? I fly in to Bishop on the 18th at 1:30. Maybe a few others will be able to make it as well.

I'm in favor of having it moved to Sunday because Larry wants to join the club. He is only here in MI every 6 weeks and on a positive note, it's on a weekend he's flying in.

If Andy can't do it on Sunday, we could also have it here and do brunch or something when Larry gets off the plane. Pretty much everyone knows me....so there's no excuse to be "scared" of going to a stranger's house. Or we could meet at a local diner if that is still the case. Chilis or one of those restaurants on Miller Rd. in Flint. Ashley works every weekend up at Reef and Tony is usually up there with her, so they were going to be at RP anyways. So by my count that only leaves one person really, John, who wants to join the club having it on Sat night (or if it even matter to him)? I'll give Mark a call and I'm sure I know what he will already say and Dale doesn't really want to do it Saturday night either. Chris won't be able to go to either because he works mid shifts. Haven't heard from anyone else of all those people who were interested in getting the club going again.....

Sorry for late reply, had knee surgery so have ben out of it for a couple days Sunday would be ok with me also as long as it's fairly early, I get up at 330 on workdays :blackeye: Whatever works for the most and I wouldn't mind checking out Troys tank. Besides getting this going is the important thing so I'm hip with whenever.

230 Sunday works, we can all meet here and then throw something on the grill. That gives Larry enough time to get off the plane and lets Mark sleep for a couple hours.

I might be able to attend as well, I won't know for sure until the day draws nearer. Our local club has pretty much evaporated with most everyone getting out of the hobby. I'd like to join you all for reef talk, eating and drinking. I will bring a dish to pass when I know if I can make it.

Also, give me the triple for sure on the date and I will change your thread title to match the 18th, if that is when it will be. Rick might be able to change it but i'm not sure.

Hope to see a bunch there.....chuck

the meeting will be held at troys this sunday but after that its going to be at reef paradise on the 2nd sat of every month..sorry people but i worked to hard at this just to let it slide..as of now and until i get the meetings back at reef paradise they are not giving the 10% off for frag members..the meeting in oct we will discuss where the club wants to go..I have also been instructed not to turn the club fund over until officers can be elected..sorry if this offends anyone but im not laying down on this one..ive laid down enough in my life..time for a change..

Why wouldn't discussing where the club wants to go happen at this meeting and not October's? Why wait?

Well just the other day you wanted nothing to do with the club or people in it. As far as holding where/when, don't you think the people joining the club should get a say so? You also said Andy doesn't want to host any meetings in the future? And as far as the club money, did you get the paperwork that was filed with the county/state from the Lanters as well along with the old funds?

Has a bank account been made and the funds from the swap/dues been put in it? So club funds don't disappear again (like old frag), I would think that at least 3-4 members should be on the account with at least 2 present to withdraw funds and not 1 person in charge of the cash. jmo

whitetiger61
09-14-2011, 05:28 PM
i was going to just lay down and let you guys take over, but a few people have influenced me not to..I believe it was purerebel that first wanted to get meetings going again, i let that post sit for a couple days to see if there was any response, there wasnt so i took the ball and ran with it.. Jim approached me for the frag swap and it was Andy that suggested to him that one should be held, I did all the leg work on FRAG's side of the swap and during that time not one other person came forward and said hey what can i do to help..A few people came forward to help at the swap ( purerebel) was the biggest help, so without Andy suggesting it and Jim and myself the club wouldnt have any funds at all..

The money is in safe and secure and im not going anywhere..i didnt go anywhere with the last frag session bit the bullet. Official sign up will be on the october meeting. You can sign up sunday but if your not on the members list sheet you wont be considered a member until you are on the list....I agree the funds should be in the bank with at least 3 members on the account and that will be when we hold elections for officers..I didnt get the license from the form officers because it is expired, but i have applied for a new license.

If this upsets anyone im sorry, but this club will suceed and thats why i have decided not to step down.

once we have a few meetings under our belt we will elect officer..they are the ones that suggest to the club member what ideas they may have to benefit the club.

officers will be voted on and elected at the November meeting..I have been a member of several clubs and even an elected officer of a few..this is how they did it and it seems to work..Im just trying to do this right..Im not going to rush this club.. small baby steps to get it back on the right track.

Rick

09-14-2011, 06:09 PM
But if the majority of the members want it done, you are telling them they can't do it? I thought it was about the club as a whole...voting etc, not 1 person dictating what to do

redemer123
09-14-2011, 06:13 PM
I don't see where the rush is in deciding who becomes officers. For one I agree with what Rick is saying because he has (as far as I know) more experience with the clubs. Secondly to give credit where credit is due, I believe it would be appropriate to thank Rick for initially stressing to put all this together. Lastly, be patient lets get some meetings going and take the time to create a NICE club people.

bluwc
09-14-2011, 06:18 PM
I'm just asking questions because now it seems that there isn't going to be anything discussed and most of us have already been talking had some ideas. Rick hasn't talked to anyone after the swap and just poofed for a while and now he's back (which is absolutely fine, so don't take it wrong) but in one sentence he says that a club needs to elect officers and then they will make suggestions to the club on what to do (vs asking the club) but then on the next sentence, he is telling everyone when/where the meetings will be held and what is going to be discussed. I thought an election was required for that? Because by reading it, it's I'm going to say one thing but do another.....

Should be an interesting meeting! Someone better have a copy of Roberts Rules of Order. First person to be elected ought to be a parliamentarian based on the discussions. Why not compromise by electing an interim Board of Directors and officers a month later. You don't have bylaws or organizational rules, so people will need to try to cooperate at the first meeting and be satisfied with some forward progress.

That is fine..i dont have a problem with that..i think it should be on the October meeting..I plan on being at this meeting but got some bad news and if i get a phone call i might not be able to make it..we can vote on interim officers if the members want to at the october meeting...

Like i said no one wanted to start this so i did..Its a good idea to hold the meetings at Reef Paradise ..its a central location for just about everyone, Andy and Reef Paradise has done so much for this club..im going to take care of the people that takes care of the club..sorry if that upsets anyone..without them we wouldnt even have a club.

Ok, I'm just going to say this final thing.

This "club" or reefing in general is supposed to be about the members, fun, hanging out with "friends" selling/trading coral etc, talking about reefs, etc. This meeting or any club for that matter is not about drama or some one on a power trip.

I nor anyone else needs a club to hang out with friends, trade some coral and have some drinks and good food (I do that already with quite a few people already, even those who are coming to the meeting (even you Rick...or did you forget all the free frags I GAVE you?). I also do not need a club to do growouts (although that was one of the FUN things that was suggested by someone else...so don't blame that one on me Andrew) but I think it would be fun if the "Club" did it. Also, you may say /demand that the meetings are going to be held on Saturdays and not budge, what happens when you only have 2-3 people come to your meetings? I know 6 off the top of my head that will not go and ruin their Saturday night, period. If the majority of the members are not willing to meet on Saturday and a club is wanting attendence, shouldn't it be up to EVERYONE on what day best suits their lives and schedule?

I don't want drama, I don't need drama, this was supposed to be a good time and fun for all and trying to get the club going again. Now I hope that everyone still attends and overlooks today's comments. I know I'm going to have a good time, food, drinks, reefs and friends!

whitetiger61
09-14-2011, 08:51 PM
this is the last time im saying this..we have always had our meetings at reef paradise..and its always been on sat nights..the club stands to lose alot ..again andy has been very generous with the members of this club..people got their `10 % off even when the club wasnt really in existance anymore..until the officers are elected in a couple months i started this im going to finish it..you say you dont need a club to do the things you do with people..joing is up to you..untl the officers are elected im standing by reef paradise and hope we will after they are elected.. and im not on a power trip..i know how these clubs work..elect officers the first meeting then they dont show up anymore.. and people will come to the meetings..we have alway had a full house before.

Hi I am very glad to see this going forward. I know Rick has been committed to setting a first meeting. I hope everyone will make it to Troy's house so we can get this organized. Personally Sunday is a better day for me as leaving my wife at home on a Saturday is hard when she hates that I love this hobby so much .Maybe we can do Sunday's at R.P. Whatever the members decide I can live with. Reefing is a very small community and we need each other as well as a great LFS to thrive. We already have a first class LFS thats the hard part, lets put our differences aside and create a first class club also. D.B.

I've been holding back on this but I guess I can't any longer....

I'd just like to say that FRAG club sat with zero activity for more than a year...maybe 2 years! This summer Rick picked up the torch...a torch that was left lying there for anyone to pick up. Not only did he pick up that torch, he managed to pull off a very successful swap...maybe the first swap ever in Flint with virtually no support.

It is easy to be an arm chair quarterback and second guess someone's efforts. I would suggest considering whether or not you really want to be the one scheduling meetings and be the point contact. It sound like fun until you are the guy doing all the work and getting second guessed. And if that still sounds like something you are interested in doing, I think there is a way to go about it that would cause less friction and put fewer people out than what we have seen here. For example it would have been more appropriate to have the meeting as planned and discuss alternatives that would work out better for the next meeting. Rick had already done a lot of prep work to schedule the time and location of this meeting...time and effort that is now wasted as well as the time and effort of others that he had discussions with.

As you know I am a director with the Mid-Michigan Marine Club at one point we were told that different days were better than the one's that worked out for our directors so we have moved the meetings on occasion. What we found is the same people showed up regardless...maybe minus a couple board members because the other day didn't work out as well. There are also considerations with regard to meetings at your LFS with the hours and personnel on hand. I feel it is important to have meetings at shops that support your club and their schedule is probably among the most important to consider. Your local shop provides a location and dedicates employees to keep the shop open which costs them money, they also provide a club discount...in exchange for this they are hoping a few members will come in and make a purchase. No one has to clean their house, get their significant other worked up about a houseful of people, etc. Maybe it is just me, but this seems like a pretty fair trade?

It shouldn't surprise me considering the state of our national economy these days, but it still blows my mind how people are oblivious regarding the need to support the things that they enjoy and how their actions impact the cycle. For example, I assume you guys enjoy hanging out on CR? CR is completely free...the only thing I ask is that you spend a few dollars with sponsors when you need to purchase something. The sponsors in return pay a few dollars to reimburse me for expenses...or provide prizes for the contests we have here on CR. How great of an arrangement is that...you get to do something you enjoy for free and spend money you were going to spend anyways. Its no different than the club's arrangement with an LFS.

Jim, Rick had been asked by Larry, Dale, Mark John and myself if he needed help with anything for the swap whether it was on here or in person (as Rick was going to both Dales and my house regularly prior to the swap). He had the support/phsycial help by many but he chose not use it. His response was that he had it under control. One can not help where help isn't wanted.

First meeting date.
Rick originally posted this thread on on Aug 23. I replied along with Larry on the 24th about it, asking if it could be moved to Sunday so that more people could come. We even said, ask Andy if he can host in Sunday and if not, we could always do it here (page 1 of this thread). On the 29th Rick posted that he would talk to Andy and let us know. Now here it is over 2 weeks later he finally replied again. Sunday's date got more attendance but that appears it doesnt matter.

As far as supporting our LFS, NO ONE ever said they did NOT want to support it, hold any meetings at Reef Paradise. Not one person has ever said that, so I am not sure where this even came from. There are just quite a few people stating that they dont want it on Saturday night but now it's his way or the highway and it doesn't matter what the "majority" wants. This is/was supposed to fun........

The thing is actions speak louder than words. Actually helping and doing things is what matters more than asking...I'm sure Rick wouldn't have said no if you guys showed up with a pile of items for the raffle or picked up a roll of raffle tickets and helped to sell them at the swap. Having the meeting somewhere else after arrangements were already made isn't supporting the shop. I'm not saying you have to have every meeting at the LFS but given that the plan was laid my opinion is you go with it.

And who said organizing events meetings for reef clubs is fun? When does the fun start?...The person that has the least fun of anyone is the guy that throws the party in my experience.

I did donate a couple of high end z's to the raffle that I could have easily sold as they were selling like hot cakes at my table but I was supporting the club. I also bought a table....to support this was swap (and I fragged more than I thought) I did my part, asked if I could help, donated, etc.....not a whole lot one could do.

And as far as changing the meeting the place/time, there were only a couple people that were attending and we did ask to have it moved and Rick said he would ask never got back with us. Now we have over 12 which is 3-4 times the original amount of particpants.....that's the part I just don't get. Even rick said...come on people lets see who's coming and no one responded. Then it was moved to Sunday as it appeared to be better for everyone's schedules and we got more participation. Just by allowing Larry to be able to come, he is bringing 3 other people with him. I thought that's what it was about, participation. And btw I am only a couple miles and maybe a 10min drive to the store. Since everyone was here anyways, I'm sure at one point we would have taken a trip up there to check out the new stock before they closed.

the point is you all changed the date before i got a chance to talk to andy..i had it worked out to where larry was taken care of..he would never miss a meeting he was in town for.due to a meeting..i was told the other day if a meeting needs to be changed it shouldnt be a problem..maybe im just not expressing the right way what i would like to see for the club..i have or had(depends on the outcome) thiongs lined up. it my sound like its my way or the highway, but its really not, just have to trust me on this i know what im doing , ive done this before..i think i have proved that..i have kept fish everyday of my life since i was 7 years old..When i moved here from arizona i shipped all my plants and my fish here and talked Rosemary through the setup over the phone while i was driving here. i have been aprt of several clubs and organized alot of events for those clubs. I will try to explain it better on sunday..lets just get together have the meeting, i will explain some of the stuff ive been talking over with people. im still going to call for elections to be held at the novemeber meeting.thats only 2 months away and gives us time to see who is going to be a regular at our meetings.. Now im going to take a stress pill and take care of my tanks..

See you all Sunday

Great Meeting! I thank everyone that came out! It was great putting faces to names and I think everyone had a good time and tons of frags went home with people for sure. Special thanks to Troy (Bluwc) and his family for hosting our first meeting, heck I just now got home :fish2:

Troy whipped out his saw and fragged some chalice, acans, and several others that I don't remember that folks brought with them and they were then passed out to people who wanted them. Mark and Dale, thanks for bringing goodies to frag. Heck I think everyone went home with something.

I can't wait for the next meeting and anyone who is interested in joining should not hesitate as FRAG is certainly on it's way imo.

Thanks again,
John

I'd like to thank everyone who came out today, it was a great time and good food. I'd like to thank Dale for brining his cap and trumpets for everyone to take a piece and Mark and Larry & Laura for bringing some coral also. I think we made some good progress getting the club going again and I think we had an excellent turnout with 15 people here today! I think everyone left with something except Jim who's tank is still cycling. No worries, let us know when you're ready for some coral and I'm many of us will have something for your tank.

Can't wait until next time.
