Crushed coral makes better kitty litter. Yes, sand is better.

Sand is better because it doesn't have the large areas for detritus to accumulate. Instead of settling into the interstitial spaces as it does with crushed coral, detritus tends to stay on top of sand where it can be eaten by your cleanup crew, vacuumed or potentially be entrained in the water column and pulled out by filtration.

There are lots of them out there. If you keep something that lives in the substrate like a pistol shrimp, you may want to add some crushed coral in the sand mix so they can burrow without the hole collapsing.

yes i added a couple handfuls of crushed coral to my live sand. it helps make homes for gobys and jawfish as well. i also added a few empty shells, blue spots are cool little architects
