If a get a 250 watt MH electronic ballast, will I be able to put any 250 watt mh bulb in it? I understand that certain ballast drive different bulbs with different results. My thinking is if I get a 250 MH electronic ballast I can try different bulbs until I find one that suits my needs.

As a general rule the E-ballasts will fire any probe start MH bulb... there are certain combinations to get better performace out of certain bulbs.

But for the ability to look at different bulbs you are on a good track. My nickels worth, a magnetic ballast might save you some cash unless you get a really good deal on an electronic.
