#ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I'm haveing a bit of a hair algea problem, I posted a topic about it a while back and got so good advice on what to do about it.Just when I was starting to win the battle I got sick and had to go to the hospitle for a few days and I acidentaly left the light on my reef tank. This obviously made maters much worse.#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#I was thinking about just leaving the lights compleatly off for a while to kill some of that algea, but I was wondering how long my corals woould last without light and whether the algea would die first or the corals. If this will work then what would be the longest I should leave the lights off?#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl#Thanks#ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#DIV#ed_cl##ed_op#/DIV#ed_cl#

I've been without lights on my tanks for 7 days last yr during the hurricanes,no problems.BTW,Xenia will take it the worse as they are highly autotrophic(light dependednt)

Tonight I decided to begin "Project Algae Blackout"

I pulled most of the stuff out of my algae infested tank that didn't have GHA/Bryopsis on the live rock itself and I moved it all to my other 120. I unplugged all of the lights and covered the tank with a comforter. I'll give it a week to 10 days maybe and see how the tank looks. I had to do this to my other 120 about 18 months ago and it took care of everything. There's only some shrooms/rics and some xenia, a couple of zoos and a kenya tree in the tank now for the most part. The xenia looked like it was done anyway.

The first rule of Algea Club is that you don't talk about Algea Club.

The second rule...

well,I guess i'm breaking the rule,I'm also a member of "algae club".Byropsis sucks,Greg,i'd recommend 6weeks minimum with as much current in the "blackout tank" as you can get
