I'm interested to see how many members would in interested in doing a nano contest. The last one we did ran from January to May. I'm envisioning rules being similar to what we had last time with total tank volume being less than 30 gallons. But also open to suggestions for any improvements we can make to the process. Here is a link to last year's rules (http://www.captivereefs.com/forum/2011-nano-contest/2011-nano-contest-sponsored-nano-customs-11608/).

I'm not sure what the prize will be just yet, but of course it would be a nice one. Last year it was an LED light fixture from nano customs.

Please post if you have any interest in being in a nano contest.

Orphek, is going to donate an LED pendant that will be awarded to the winner! The prize will be a DIF50 20K - 50 watt LED emitter with 90 degree lens which is rated for up to a 24x24-inch tank.

if it was a smaller tank..say 20 gallons, but connected to a larger system would that be allowed?

Nope. You could have a 20 gallon tank and a 10 gallon sump though. :)

Great tanks and definitely allowed. :)

Hmm I do have a 2.5g tank sitting around. I just need to convince the bigwigs at work to allow me to have it sit on my desk. Been wanting a little desk pico since I started there.

Great news! I have procured an awesome prize for this contest! Our high end LED sponsor, Orphek, is going to donate an LED pendant. The prize will be a DIF50 20K - 50 watt LED emitter with 90 degree lens which is rated for up to a 24x24-inch tank.

I'm in! I have a new idea...

Unfortunately I don't think I'm going to be able to participate this year like I had hoped. I just recently took a position in Cincinnati and start down there mid January. Until Kev finds a job down there, he'll be staying up here with the house and I'll be splitting my weeks between the two cities. That means I won't be able to devote the time to this build like I had hoped. This looks like an awesome prize and I can't wait to see the other nano tanks!

Let the competition begin, and good luck to all contestants.

I will work on a more formal post with all the rules, etc. but if you know you will be participating for sure, you can start a thread in the nano contest forum ("http://www.captivereefs.com/forum/nano-contest/). Be sure to select 2012 Nano Contest for the subtopic. Feel free to include your tank specs in your first post. (The rules will be similar to the 2011 Rules that are a sticky in the Nano Contest forum right now.)

AJ :)

I assume you are working on the new rules , as the old rules are not available ATM.

Here is the link to last years:
http://www.captivereefs.com/forum/nano-contest/2011-nano-contest-sponsored-nano-customs-11608/

If someone has any requests, suggestions, complaints about last year's rules, please let me know so we can address them. Otherwise this year's will be pretty similar.

Also, we need to have at least 12 people in the contest and at least 2 see it all the way to the end in order to award the big prize. In the event there are less, we may postpone the contest until we have enough interest. To help encourage participation, I am also going to work on a "half way prize". Criteria for to qualify for the half way prize is being developed.

The 12 people thing kind of complicates things. I don't really want to setup a new tank, cycle it, and then leave it sitting empty for an unknown amount of time. How do you plan to determine how many people will be participating?

AJ :)
12-30-2011, 01:23 PM
Thanks for the link! :) Maybe we need a show of hands for those ready to get started?

I'm in for sure.

Kinda hoping to get this rolling where I could pick corals for this comp at the upcoming frag swap. :)

Put me in the solid "I wanna do this" camp :) I have a sketch and was planing to make a thread right now, I am going to build a tank for this... hope it pans out. I haven't started to build the tank yet due to lack of information. I hope we can get this rolling before the swap cause I can get a lot of my livestock there.

Ooops I said I couldn't do it and then never said I could after all in this thread... I actually started a thread for it already where I explained that I changed my mind AGAIN and could actually do it. I wasn't going to but we got one of those little picture frame type tanks for Christmas. It's only like 2.2 gallons so it can be easily mounted on the wall and moved. So, as long as this gets going, I'm a for sure yes!

Looks like that's 4 Yes and 1 maybe so far...

That would put me out then...I already have my 36g bowfront I planned on using. Bought it a couple of months ago when the contest was first thought of and have been waiting for it to start.

Last year you were allowed to fill early, just no livestock. That way your tank could be cycled prior to the start date. Jim announced a specific saying the day that the contest started, and you had to take a picture of your tank with a paper with that saying on it to prove that your tank was "empty" on day 1.
