Several months ago, I bought a used 75g display tank and stand. I just started setting it up today (finally!!!). I added the sand and water..ran it through a test. Unfortunately, I have a couple of leaks with the PVC where there is a connector. Tank is empty now. I just got back from the hardware store with the remedy (I hope). Hopefully, I will have t it up and running later tonight.

Here's a pic of the tank while I'm emptying it.

What fun! Setting up a new tank. All of the possibilities. Have fun with all that. While you are working on things, you might want to consider cutting out a rectangle out of the rear of the canopy. Leave four or six inches on each corner and open up the back. You will get a lot more air in there and you can mount those computer fans to blow over the T5s and over the water surface. If you have a chiller, you may certainly disregard this suggestion. HA

The entire length of the top is actually open. I know you can't see if from this angle. There is also a fan ... of course at the wall end! But I did leave 4-5 inches between the wall and tank, so at least it will be able to provide circulation.

I want to keep things alive! LOL Definitely zoas and chalice as they are my favorites. I'll probably do some SPS on the higher reaches, and some LPS as well. Not entirely sure about fish, but planning on at least a pr of clowns, a six line wrasse, mandarin, yellow watchman goby, a long-nose hawk fish, blennies, etc. (Maybe I'm a little more sure about fish than I thought I was!) Plus the garden variety clean up crew.

nice tank.
Thanks!

I've added some rock, snails, and hermits. I will be adding more rock over the week. Taking some from my 300g system. Based on the gorilla crab incident, all of that will dipped before being added. I also added a branch of green zoas. They seem to be doing very nicely.

And on the left side, the gorilla crab is in the vase. :crabby:

I wanted to provide a little more information about this set up.
As mentioned, I bought this tank used several months ago from a Captive Reefs member.

The basic specs are:
75g glass aquarium
Metal Halide 150w x2
T5HO 54w x2 are visible -- these are NOT being used (the plan right now does not include these)
4 way return - Mag 9.5 - alternating current using a SCWD
Underneath it all - a 29g 3-chamber sump

Additional plans include:
Add a Koralia powerhead (or two)
Upgrade to LED (currently testing LED set up on my 300g -- so far, so good)

I welcome comments, suggestions, ideas or general questions (that I probably can't answer! LOL)

You have very good taste, Miz!! Might be a little rich for my blood.. at least right now. But I do appreciate the suggestion. And that's exactly what I'm looking for.... suggestions! :)

And as far as that crab.... he's always balancing on the tippy-tip of his claw...trying to get out. Not that I'm really trying to torture him, but.................. Until his new digs are ready.... that's where he is staying. He is eating. Yes.. I fed him, although I'm pretty sure he could live off of his fat reserves from all my other stuff he's eaten for quite some time.

I like your taste in corals. :) I'll certainly be watching to see how it goes.
Have you thought of perhaps making an agrocrete shape for zoas to grow on or eventually cover?

thefishgirl
04-07-2012, 10:54 AM
I have definitely been thinking about shape, but not so much agrocrete. I have a lot of rock to work with, and I have only a fraction of it in here at the moment. I am going to be adding some larger pieces for base, then I have some tonga rock as well. I plan on doing some caves for low light lovers, shelves that have some shade as well.

You likely dont need two MP40es' I have one in my 120 and thats plenty coupled with my return, they may seem expensive but they are easily the best powerhead on the market.

The MPs do indeed seem to be very neat. I like the possibilities. I think I'm going with a Koralia for now, and I've added the MP to the wish list. (I just happen to have a few Koralias already...they just need to be cleaned.)

Looks like you're off the a great start. Nice Rics. (Colin never disappoints) When you get ready to do Vortech's I would suggest 2-MP10's as opposed to 1-MP40.(I found out the hard way)

binford4000

My wife's 75 has two MP 10's and they create tons of wide flow.I would dare say a 40 would never see more then 50% power use in that small a tank

Pro X
04-07-2012, 07:48 PM
1-MP40 was just too centralized and blew sand around rock work unless turned down too much to justify it. 2-MP10's set @10 on Reef Crest Mode 8" CL up and 5" CL over from each end on same end provide a broad flow and a Tunze Nano Wavebox on the other end keeps things undulating nicely.

Just my 2 cents ; I tried almost everything before this setup and I couldn't be happier with the results.

So, I've add a bit more rock now. I still have diatom bloom...but I went ahead and moved some corals into this tank. I just really could not wait. LOL

Yellow things -- anyone know what these are called?
