Well, I've posted a few random bit's and pieces of my system here and there. I figured I should finally start a tank thread.

Tank
A 60gallon breeder, 48"x24"x12". I love the long, wide shallow tanks. Though they can, and do pose a few problems. One being how little room you have to work with when coral start to grow taller. Two being water evaporation, I'm not sure about everyone else, but I add close to 5 gallons fresh topoff water every other day. A little over 10gallons if I go a week with out topping it off.

But overall I love my little tank. It's been running for about a year now.

Lighting
I use a 36" T5HO aquatic life fixture, suspended above the tank(around 12" or so) with an aquaticlife hanging kit. The suspension kit makes tank cleaning a breeze, no heavy canopy to lift or dangle.
I have my reasons for using a to small light fixture over this tank, as well, more on that later.
In the T5HO fixture are ATI bulbs, 2 aquablue special and 2 blue+. In the near future I may swap out one of the aquablue special's for ATI's newer Coral Plus bulb.
The new configuration would be (front to back)
Blue +
AquaBlue Special
Blue +
Coral +
If all goes well I'll switch the other Aquablue Special for another Coral +. There's also plans to add two DIY LED strips to this tank. One in the front and one in the back. These will be made with a combo of blue and royal blue 3watt LED chips. Depending on how many LED's I plan to add will also impact my choice in T5HO bulbs in my fixture. If possible I may get rid of the actinic bulbs completely, I'm tired of how quickly they stop being beneficial to coral and the replacement cost of a little over $40 twice a year. That being said the future Lighting will be a combo of T5HO and LED. Best of both worlds. LED actinic supplementation, and T5HO for growth and everything else.

Well at least until Plasma lights hit the seen, then so long LED's, goodbye T5HO's, and what were those VHO things.....:oldman:when I had a reef we used real sunlight dang nabbit, kids and there special lights these days :silly:

Filtration
Not much on this system. Two aquaclear HOB filter's, and one Corallife 65gallon
super skimmer.....at least it's running..
One aquaclear is filled with Boyd's Chemi pure Elite and rubble, the other is filled with BlueLife's Clear Fx Pro filter media and a sponge(cleaned weekly). Then there's the skimmer, it works, thats all I'm gonna say for now.

Future plans include
Finally adding a two part sump. First part being a 30gallon macro algae refugium, which will overflow into the "sump". The sump will contain the heater, skimmer, and return pump. And maybe some more live rock, over all I'm hoping to get a 48"x18" x13" or at least a 36"x18"x13"tank. The 30gl macro algae tank will have a 4" deep sandbed, and will be filled with various algae's, and small rubble. Hopefully keeping my pod population up and my nutrients down.

Stand
I made the tank stand myself, with cutting edge 2x4 technology. Leaving what I hope to be plenty of room for the future sump. The height of the stand was intentional, I wanted a shallow tank that when walked up to, it would be easy to view from the top down. But when sitting on the couch I would have a nice pleasant through the glass view. Again this is more or less possible because of how shallow the tank is. I also over built the stand, so I'd have some usable counter space as well.

Flow
Is provided by one modded maxi jet 1200, and whatever the aquaclear's kick out. I plan to add at least one more Koralia powerhead as money allows( in other words quit buying coral, and upgrade:smash::smash:)

Feeding goes as follows
1- Turn daylights off, leave actinic's on.
2- I mix up some rod's food, cyclopeze, and coral frenzy, into a nice soup.
3- Turn off all sources of flow(including skimmer), squirt a little bit of the soup (just a little) over my favia's, acans, and other lps.
4- Then here's the hard part( at least for me, cause I have little patience) do nothing more for at least 15minutes. This is the amount of time (for my tank, and coral. may vary on different tanks ect ect. Each system is unique and different.) it takes for my lps to really open up and start "feeding".
5- At this point I turn my small aquaclear HOB filter back on just to get a little flow in the tank, help those sweepers to move around and catch food. Then I proceed to target feed every open polyp, eye, mouth, head, anything that's open and looking for food. They really love mysis shrimp, or any big meaty chunks.
6- Stand guard with my two acrylic pointer sticks, and keep my clowns and chromises from stealing food.(you don't have to do this, but that's just me, my fish get fed enough as it is, greedy pigs) ( I love copy and paste)

For the fish I feed a pellet food, and whatever they eat from the coral feeding routine.

Live Stock
2 clown fish's
4 chromis
2 peppermint shrimp
Lots of baby snail's(forgot what kind, long pointy shell's, nocturnal, reef safe)
And a couple of hermit's. I know I need more than two, but the dang little
@#$%$#:mad: @$#%'s always knock my frags over. So that's that.

Coral
I'll get back to this list soon. Pics forth coming soon.

An old pic of the tank, shortly after setting up.
http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc466/jasonstan3/new%20pics/100_6100.jpg
I've since, taken out the other two maxi jets and intake filter. Just to much direct flow, need more gentle flow.

How do those coral plus look/ run by themselves and with the other bulbs on? Think it's worth getting rid of the actinics and just going aquablue specials and coral +'s ?

by far one of the brightest coral's in my tank. I love this wicked favia.

Please excuse the algae, once the sump is finished and running with the new skimmer. The unwanted algae should clear up soon.

I know you posted pics of all those beautiful zoa's just to **** me off

Well Miz, just so you don't feel so bad. I've been battling some nasty hair algae and green cyano for awhile now. I had just done another tank cleaning and dipped all my zoa's in a peroxide mix, just a day before I snapped all those pics.

Some opened right back up, others are taking longer. And a couple (including one of my speckled red AKA darthmaul mini colonys) may just melt away. I'm glad I have two back up colony's of the SR's that are thriving, other wise I'd be crying.

This is what all my zoas looked like, or worse.
http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc466/jasonstan3/100_7248-1.jpg
Only posting this picture for you Miz, but we ALL have or "bad" moments with our systems. Not everyone likes to admit it, or show it. But if it'll put a smile on your face, you've had a bad string of luck lately. But I hear upgrading your tank really helps fix it.

These still need dipping
http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc466/jasonstan3/100_7325-1.jpg

And now I'm just waiting to see which ones pull through.
http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc466/jasonstan3/100_7326-1.jpg

It seems like the Fruit Loops and Chong Bongs are handling the dip the best so far
http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc466/jasonstan3/100_7316.jpg
http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc466/jasonstan3/100_7313.jpg
Though, the Fruit Loops seemed to have morphed a little here and there(bright orange'ish mouth). Not sure if that's from being repeatedly covered in hair algae or something else. There still one of my favorites.

I'm smiling yes :) But only because crappyness an all you still have some freaking awesome looking zoas!!!! Lol
I will say though, I'll take some melting zoas any day over HA. Then again I don't have the zoas you have. Mine don't even have names!!! Lol

Thnx Old Man, Miz, for the kind words.

Though I have to be honest, running this system without a sump or skimmer( I don't recommend this for anyone), for the last +2 years has been a labor of love and lot's of daily work.

All that said, I can't wait to get my sump finished. Just need to make some time to glue the baffles in place.

And I've decided to go with an Avast "peg leg" skimmer(recirculating skimmer rated for 50-200gallons), along with an Avast MR5 reactor, when there no longer on back order. Then since this guy I know figured out the best bio pellet reactor to use, I'll be adding one of those inline to the skimmer's intake.

Algae I will banish thee back to depths, or just spend a ton of money trying....

Thnx, me to as you can tell.

Very nice coral collection you have going there.

Thnx Chris, it's funny the ones that have grown out the most. Have become my favorites in the tank so far, and there all "no name" zoas, well except the mowhawks (but those grow like weeds, never figured out why or how people are still selling them for 10 and 15 a polyp). But once they turn from an ugly individual single polyp frag, into a colony of hundreds, they take on a whole new beauty. The plan is, if I have the patience. Is to move all the frags and other corals off the bottom, and let the zoas carpet the whole bottom of the tank.

binford4000
10-07-2012, 04:22 PM
Those Mohawks look fantastic and fruit loops are sweet too ! I have a bio pellet reactor that would work nice on your tank tell you get the one you really want! LMK I am laid up for awhile so I am easy to get ahold of for now !

Well it looks like I won't be able to get the Avast peg leg skimmer after all. :( :( :( Oh well, there is the future basement build in the works as well (kinda makes budget tight doing two builds at once).

Instead this great friend (Scott.S) is bringing over an old Reef Octopus NWB-200 half cone skimmer for me. He was gonna use it, but it never made it out of the box..oh lucky me ;). It has the old Hailea OTP pump they use to use, before the bubble blaster pumps ( I've read discouraging reviews that almost scared me away from Reef Octopus entirely). And if the pump doesn't tickle my fancy quite right, then I'll just have to shell out for a Sicce PSK 1000 or 600 ( I know these skimmer pump's rock).

Since this skimmer is rated for up to 250gallons, I think that will be more than enough to handle some bio pellets and my over feeding. Crap something always keeps me from finishing my posts, gotta go. Just got a call my pump and skimmer are on route as we speak, just have to wrestle two kids into a car and make it to the atm, love last minute dashes. Pics coming soon

Well not much has changed yet, dang job keeps getting in the way of my hobby......don't they know how irritating it is to have to go to work all the time. :jester: . However one thing has changed, i will not be using the Reef Octopus skimmer, for a few reasons.
1) it's to big
2) it's to big
3) It has a very specific level of water it needs to sit in to work just right, and my 14" deep baffles just are going to get along with it, nor do I have the room to raise the skimmer in my sump due to stand requirements. Not to mention the water levels always changing due to me not having a ATO system setup yet.
4) it's loud, louder than my wife would like to hear
( and that is the main reason it has to go, gotta make the wife happy. A happy wife is a happy life)

It's not as if it's a bad skimmer, it's just not right for my exact sump. Now if I was only planning on having a 8.6" - 9" max level it would work great, except the noise of course. I even went as far as trying to figure out how to plump a secondary sump tank to only house the skimmer, plumbed into the main sump. Luckily there are some great reefers out there in our community, thanks old man :oldman: .

So I'm going back to my original plan. An Avast marine works "peg leg" with recirculating kit added. I talked to the guys at Avast, and they've reassured me that they've tested the CS1 "pegleg" particular model in up to 20" of water and it still ran perfect. So just gotta save up some more green.

I did order one of there MR5 media reactor's for carbon, and all I can say is quality. Got the order in two days, all emails, and questions were answered within minutes of sending. Definitely two big thumbs up for these guys so far.

Though if anyone reading this can answer this one question for me, whats a good "pelletized" carbon brand. It's the only recommendation from avast is to use pellet carbon, I guess it tumbles better IDK, just trying to get the best reaction out of my reactor, and also what pump does everyone recommend? I was going to use a standard Maxijet 1200.

Next purchase, next to the skimmer, will be another MR5 reactor for GFO, and if theres room, maybe a davy jones locker.

Since my skimmer plans kept going back and forth, I haven't even glued the baffles in place yet, grrrrrrr. So if there's anyone experienced in building sumps and gluing baffles. I'd love some help/company, ( I have a six pack of 8.6% home brew beer my buddy makes, and possibly a frag or two to give away. My schedule is busy, but I'd really appreciate it. PM me for my contact info, unless I know you and you already have it.

Other than that, I'm still battling hair algae issues, keeping my alk stable, and keeping my mag stable. Though once I get my calcium levels under 800, things should start getting better. I hope.

BRS Bulk Large Particle Lignite Aquarium Carbon - Bulk Reef Supply (http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/brs-bulk-large-particle-lignite-aquarium-carbon.html)

It's not pellete's but fairly large . I would look into a rio 800 or 1200 to run the reactor or something similar if it was me. Sounds like you got a plan going and looking forward to the results ! Meijer and wall mart do sell carbon pelet's also for cheap. Have not used em but have been tempted lol

Just a few iphone pic's I snapped after doing a little re-arranging. Other than two small pieces, the tank is now free of all SPS coral. The next step will be phasing out 85% of all zoas and other softies(hmmm...maybe a sale thread needs to be started soon :) ) . Then fill the remainder with various LPS, favia's, acan's, chalice's, more favia....

The hair algae is 90% destroyed, yay. The green cyano is starting to clear up. And the Neo Marine salt has been working great as well. Still need to finish the sump.

Not bad for the ol' iphone on the go.

Just got my reactor running finally, decided to use the large particle size lignite carbon from bulk reef supply. It's being powered by a MJ1200, but I think there's to much flow going through the reactor at the moment. May have to downsize to a MJ900 instead. I tried to use the valve they included to reduce the flow, but man did that make the pump run loud, really really loud. So .... meh.

Here's a small video if the youtube link actually works

http://youtu.be/HY-nTrw34-A

Overall I'm really happy with Avast and the reactor. Nice quality, easy to hook up. Plus I love the sticker :) . Can't wait to get a skimmer from them, and one of there ATO units.

Well, not all of them just most of them. There are certain morphs I'll never get rid of. First and foremost being my fruitloops zoas. The main mini colony will never be for sale.

But the rest, lets just say I love LPS more. Especially favia, and acan echinatas. Just starting out with acan lords for the second time. Having better results this time as well.

not to shabby, for a first time sump build.

one question, anyone know what size return plumbing I should use on the return pump ? The main tank is drilled in the bottom with a 1.5" overflow pipe.

binford4000

I would use a one in return with a 1 1/2 in drain

jstan
12-23-2012, 04:47 AM
Thanks, glad you chimed in. If you hadn't I would've used 3/4 return pipe. Can't wait to get this plumbed and filled.

Also thanks to the people who have stopped by and bought some zoas from me. As of last night I made enough to buy myself an Avast marine works "peg leg" skimmer. Just have to wait till the new year for them to make and ship it.

Next year will be a great year for this tank.

binford4000
12-23-2012, 05:31 AM
Either one would work honestly.it's a good practice to have your return smaller then drain unless your running multiple drains then it's really just a matter of the math. The one inch will give you more volume is all. Fuge looks great by the way ! Glad to hear your sales went good enough to get the skimmer you wanted ! Looking forward to see how much skim that thing pulls out. Have a good holiday

Thanks for stopping by Gary it was nice to meet you.

Well that just figures, I finally have enough cash for the skimmer I want. Couldn't order it earlier due to the bank being closed for the holiday. And conflicting work schedule. Then today, I finally get to the bank deposit the money, sit down and go to place the order.......Sorry, but we are not shipping now, until after Jan 1st........ Grrrrrrr, so now more waiting, and more waiting.

Updates, water checked/tested the sump. All seals held water perfectly.

Cut and cleaned all the pvc parts for the return plumbing, and found that I had measured wrong in a couple of areas. So I'll have to make another trip to the hardware store.

However according to the sales person @ HD, all the back and forth trips to HD, standing around scratching my head, & trying to figure out how something is going to work. Is supposedly good for keeping alzheimers at bay, huh something else my tank is good for, I guess. :oldman:

It's getting there, had a few small setbacks. After testing the sump with water, I had the wife help me move the sump into place. Everything looked good, filled it back up. Watched it for a while was still going good, left for xmas dinner. Came back home and the sump sank into/through the foam board I had placed under the sump, to help give the sump a smooth/level surface to sit on, the bottom of my stand where the sump sits, is a bit uneven and bumpy.

So I drained the sump, moved it off the foam board, and waited for the holiday to be over so I could make another trip to HD.

Then yesterday, I purchased a couple of sections of sanded hardwood plywood sheet. This will sit on top of the foam board to help even out the weight of the sump, and hopefully no more sinking sump. Go to put the wood sheets under the tank and of course the one board is just a little to big to sit flush.......Right well a small trip downstairs, fire up the ol' circular saw and perfection.

Get the foam board in place, get the wood boards in place, due one last check of the plumbing and all the measurements and fittings. Only to find my measurements are off with a couple of the pipe lengths......time for a beer, dogfish Theobrama 9%( I love those high gravity beers), sounds good to me.

Re-cut and re-fit and re-measure again, plumbing looks good, I just have to cement all the PVC in place, then hook up the return pump, open the intake valve, and should be good. That's getting done tonight, depending on how things are after work, with a 4year old daughter, and an 8month old daughter, sometimes the evenings at home are a battleground. But they'll grow out of it...right?...they will, they have to.

And this morning the sump is still sitting perfectly level, and no sinking tank or crushed foam board. Yay, off to work. So finally things are coming together, no more problems. Just a few small things to wrap up.

Hey quick question. I just read the thread about your salt change. Have you switched over completey yet. adding a sump to your system is gonna a big initial flush of water. Just tryin to give u something to think about.

Oh yeah by the way. With the kids its up and down. I dont want to upset you, but being a parent is the most selfless thing anyone can do. It's easy it's hard. some seasons are better than others. Good luck man I'm praying for ya!

I've done quite a few water changes with the new salt since then.
I love the neo marine stuff, and my tank seems to love it as well. I've got an extra 30 gallons mixed up waiting to fill up the sump.

sorry for the blue'ish tint, my phone doesn't handle my lights to well

A frag of what I had thought to be a favia(when I purchased it as such...), but is indeed an Acan echinata. I'm actually very happy with this piece, it's more than coloring up. You can see the red, purple, green, and a little yellow/orange'ish color developing in the center of the one mouth. When I bought it, the only colors were red and brownish purple.

And lastly a very small clip of the mother colony I took the frag from.

Hope you all enjoy.
