I have used the Reef Octopus NS80 and the Hydor Slim Skim Nano Skimmer on my tank. Neither one pulled anything close to what this lil $6.00 surface skimmer is pulling out of my tank. I've got it hooked up to an MJ600 that is also acting as my intake pump. The pictures show 3 days worth of YUCK! I'm very pleased :)

That looks like algea growth to me. Much like the slimes/algea that grows on the waterfall end of a HOB filter.
I wasnt aware that surface skimmers pulled anything out of your water. I thought they acted as an overflow, to get to mechanical filtration, that cleans the water.
Looks like it is definitely working though!

Well without it the surface of my water was nothing but protein. http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j338/NanaReefer/IMG_1975.jpg
Here is what the Slim Skim nano skimmer was pulling out. http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j338/NanaReefer/IMG_1990.jpg
and again the surface skimmer.

Looks pretty much the same to me :) It is definitely not algae.

Glad to see ya got a solution to the surface issue that has been driveing you crazy for sometime now. Looks like it's doing a good job removeing the suspended excess protiens and waste. Sometmes old school is the best school eh?? Any chance of a pic of the surface while it's being used ?? :oldman:

Slime biomass? Did you make this up?!! LOL It's called surface protein! The protein being lighter then water, floats. Without having an overflow I had no way of removing it.

A slime biomass is any collection of bacteria that forms a slime mat, like cyano. I get a slime growing in my freshwater filter outlet from the lights, I don't know specifically which algae or bacteria it is, so I use the generic slime biomass. I've had protein film on my tank that my overflow skims off and it doesn't look like that when it builds up, which is why I'm wondering if it is just protein or if what's happening is the protein film gets on the overflow and ambient tank light starts growing slime on the overflow eating the protein.. :tongue_out: Just thinking aloud in any event, I do that from time to time. ;)

This info is a first for me :) What does your build up look like? But I am understanding what your saying now. Now I'm wondering where the surface film is going if in fact this stuff in the surface skimmer is NOT protein. Is it just going directly into my fuge? What can I add to the intake tube to catch this stuff?

I have a BC29 with the build in overflows, I get a slime that's clear on the inside if I have a massive protein skin on top of the water, which hasn't happened in about a year, but it never changes color unless the lights throw some ambient light past the divider which hasn't happened since I redid the lighting. Anything that gets past will end up in your fuge but eventually it will break down and be absorbed by any algae in the fuge or recycled for a 2nd pass at your skimmer so I wouldn't worry about doing anything additional to what you are.
