live rock in place of bio balls

thinking about removing all the bioballs from my sump and in its place putting LR. does it have to be completely covered in h2o or will wet/dry do same effect? heard that the balls only add to the everlasting nitrate issues, any advice is welcomed thanks

i leave about 20% out of the water maybe more

thanks should i do the switch all at once or few pieces to couple hands of balls and wait for bit and do more

Do a little bit at a time. To much may cause a mini cycle.

I switched mine three years ago. I changed it over 3 weeks removing a third each week.
