Ok,so I was out and she was on board !! Until Sunday. :doh: I posted some equipment and we we're getting ready to start to bag fish and coral to take to the LFS. Then she dropped the bomb and discovered how weak I really am ! Anyone who knows me I ttruely believe happy wife makes for happy life. After hearing her out about the corals she has had for over ten years I asked the worst question of my life !So what was it ? Well what do you want then dear?? If your wife is a reef geek NEVER ask that !!! So the bin fords are staying I guess. So here's the plan and the official first entry of the dream build. It's not that bad I enjoy setting up the systems. Anyway

So the 150 and 75 are history !! Going to keep the 40 breeder for a qt and the new tank has been ordered. The tank will be a 48 long by 36 deep by 22 tall with a 18 inch hob over flow with two 1 inch drains. For pumps I will be using two bubble blaster hydro 5000. Each pump will be piped directly to a 3/4 flow inductor each. Flow will be handled by two MP 40's to start and we'll add more if needed tho I doubt we'll need more.


The fuge will be a glass 36 long by 24 wide by 24 tall. In the fuge I plan to do something diffrent. I plan to incorporate a media /rubble chamber and elevate the live rock off the bottom and there will be no DSb. I plan to also run dual protein skimmers (BK 160 mini's)

Well that a start of explaining the new plan. Ughhhhh ! I will start the pictures as soon as I start the new stand so to be continued... :hypnotized:

I always wanted to do a 4 x4 cube but the cost from tenacore is crazy! We are going to be a one tank family from now on except for qt of course. The plan is to incorparate her and my tank together and see what we end up with. We actually will probably have less fish. Lol. Like that's going to happen! She loves to drag fish home! With exception of the new tank and stand we already have all the equipment and led lighting we need. This puppy will be lit up with six. Ai. Super blues. Sweet!

And the first of many parts delivery's arrived Friday. This includes my brand new 10" compound slide miter saw and cordless drills! Time for some lumber !!

These 3/4 flow inductors will be connected to a hydro 5000 bubble blaster each. That's right dual return pumps and dual skimmers. Arghh !! Now that's some Power. I am planning on using only these and two MP 40's on the back wall.there will be no other flow devices

I am going to build a wood stand that will house everything but the chiller. I also have 85 linear foot of tounge and grove cedar comeing from a good friends mill up north to dress the whole thing out !

I think it looks sweet ! The new cube will go where the 150 presently is. That system goes away next weekend ! I have 50# of rock comeing from Marco's rock to see what it looks like then if we like it we start building islands and will put the stand in place and add some vertical support on the Joyce's where the tank will be.. I also have seven bags of tropic Eden reef flakes comeing too so everything seems to be looking to be on schedule. :thumbsup:

Well blew of the overtime and headed to Home Depot! Got a nice start on the stand and hope to have it done by this weekend except for the dressy stuff. Gotta head home for a weekend to pick that wood up !

I really like the foot print after seeing the stand together. The 48 x 36 is going to look really sharp in my opinion .The new fuge is in so we'll be cutting baffles soon ! The new fuge will be 36 x 24 x 24. Nothing like a new build to get the blood going !

It's impressive how much space a tank full of corals can take up when put into other storage where you try to give each coral some room all on the same level.

It is doing very well tx ! I think the losses will be minamil. I put vortechs in each tub and a skimmer in each one along with heaters so it is matter of doing general house keeping I guess. I also put a AI super blue on each tub. It's a real redneck aquarium. Rofl. :redneck:

Ok time for an update !! The tank should be on the stand this Friday so I better get my backside in gear !! Started the fuge tonight and what ya know I actually like it ! Lol still need to instal a trash wall which I will do Tuesday night after the silicone dries. So here's a few pics.

Yup,that would be correct ! I plan to run tunze nano power heads in the fuge to keep particals suspended that is why I am raising the skimmers and rock. Nothing real strong tho. They sell a 475 gph one which I am thinking will be just about right. The flow inductors connected to each hydro 5000 on the return side of it should give me a ton of flow.

Lol the wife just couldn't do it ! She had a really hard time when we took her tank down and actually cried when it was gone.This is the compromise just one tank from now on ! Bigger yes but just one !! She keeps stareing at the vats on the floor and inspects every piece she's freaking out it's funny as heck ! Hopefully the tank will arrive Friday :big_grin:

Chuck, how much space do you have between the bottom lip of the stand, and the top rim of the tank? That looks like it might be tight getting your skimmers in and out for cleaning, etc...

Yeah it's tight in the front ! Just enough tho lol but both side have over 11 inches so not a prob. I am planning ful size doors on all three sides so it's easy to get at anything I need too !

Excellent! I knew you would have planned this out well. I know that I made a similar mistake with a custom tank that I ordered for my sump in the past. It was to tall to for me to get skimmers etc in and out of the cabinet door, that tank made for a nice lizard cage for a while though, and it is now my "bottom sump".

Lol it's funny the lil things we forget ! Your not alone dude. If you look carefully you'll notice the sump sits 5 inches below the front opening ! I did the stand planning for a 20 tall but ordered a 24 tall dah serious brain fart but just used some redneck enginearin !:redneck:

Well Luke delivered the tank today ! Thanks to everyone at Ypsilanti Fish Doctors! The tank is exactly the way I planed it. And I may say it looks awesome ! I made a few changes to the back rock scape but over all I like it. Still waiting for the bosses approval tho. Time to start plumbing this bad boy. Here's a few pics for now.

No more ray's !! Lol I have all the rock I want in the display. The wife saved some Huge pieces so allot of that real estate is already claimed. I went with acrylic just because of the weight. We're talking about moving out west or Hawaii in a few years so acrylic made more sense then trying to haul around a six foot glass box ! I also really wanted to match the coral beds we saw in kona when we go snorkeling! Thanks for the compliments tho AJ :)

Lol I thought the same thing and tried it. The only problem is the monster devils hand leather she has ! It needs a ton of room which is why I put the SPS island back in the center. The toad stool and leather that she has to have no matter what are going to eat up allot of room. Rough measurements are both rear corners will be fully taken by just those species. I have to go see John still and get that tonga still also ! So there's room for improvement. That cement you gave me is awesome !! Once that stuff dries there's no going back ! Tx for your input and I'm working on her to loose the big leather but I don't think I'll win that war. Lmao :oldman:

Well premium aquatics got the sand here faster then I could dream of. Got five bags of tropic edan Reef crystals sand and man this stuff is sweet. Hardly no dust pouring right into the tank. I have been told it will hardly cloud the tank up when I add the water. We will see Sunday. Here's a look for those intrested.

I also got busy with the fun stuff ! PLUMBING !!! I got the dual drains tied into the header and installed the gate valves and WYE check valves on the returns today. Should have the pumps all in place and tied in tomorrow hopefully. Looking to be right on sceaduale so far !

Well had a pretty productive day on the build ! Sand is all leveled out and the drain is done and both returns are fully plumbed! Tomorrow we're shooting for getting the UV sterilizer installed and the chiller fully plumbed and in place. Looking real good for water on Sunday morning ! Thanks ! Yeah I really like the foot print too! Not to small and not to big ! The big question is how is the 18 inch over flow going to work ? I really am nervous about the wide skimming opening. I did the math over and over and I should be around 1000 gph which in my book is the sweet spot for fuge's and skimmers. With dual returns the flow inductors will create some serious current. If they 're to much we'll just switch em out for the plain old nozzles and slow things down ! Thanks for the compliments. :)

Well was going to tie in the chiller today but decided to let it soak for the night and put the the new skimmer together !
I was going to get another BK mini but the new Diablo has been calling to me since it came out. And it's one third the cost ! I added a micro adjustable valve so it will be more adjustable.

Lol! No such thing as over skimming ! The two skimmers wiill do a nice job of it ! There is going to be allot of fish in this tank when it's done. She wants to have small schools of several species so I sure hope this works as advertised.

Well got the chiller and the UV sterilizer plumbed in today and finished up the filter sock housing too ! I also fabricated up the stands for the skimmers so they will be at exact height they need to be at. Tomorrow it's time to reinforce the floor and install the dual GFO's that will be driven of each return pump. Then it will be ready for water and salt on Sunday.

I do have a question on the lighting, it seems to me that you would want to turn those SOL's 90 degrees for this tank, or even make 2 rows of them? You have a very large footprint to cover now, as opposed to that measly 18" you had before.

Maybe even fab up something to hold them like the FIVE side of dice, 4 corners, one in the middle? I don't know, just throwing out some ideas...

There will be 6 sol super blues ! 2 rows of three. I have another rack just like that one in the pic. I am going to have each rack on it's own controler also so I can set them according to species demand. I like the dice idea tho Mike ! I am planning to set the lites up next week. Gotta let it cycle first so the other rack will stay over the vats.

Well we got the water today from Sheerwood international Marine ! Absolutely the way to fill a tank ! Scott is da man. The water is all r/o di and 0 TDS. He pulled his van up added and mixed my salt in no time at all and filled it up in less then hour !!! :thumbsup: Then he stuck around while I tuned the drain and returns tell it was running like it should. This guy has been around don't let his age fool you he walks the walk and not just talk , I plan to do more business with him. The Binfords are impressed and happy campers. You did a great job Binford and I can still sit in my family room and watch tv and not here the tank can't wait till we start to put the fish and coral in. Having the water delivered was a great way to go fast and easy

Well we got it tuned in and the SG is at .020 @ 64 degree's. So gotta let the temp come up and get the SG where it belongs then add the enzyme 9. The tropic Eden reef crystals are awesome the tank hardly clouded up and the sock is taking good care of the light residuals quickly. I was concerned about using 1 in drains and two return pumps but the math said it would work and what do ya know it is very quiet and the flow inducters are creating a nice wave. I did have to open the pump bypasses slightly but so far very happy and this tank is very quiet !! Love that with a little more tweaking it should be close to silent. The gfo reactors are getting flow from the pumps also which is a nice bonus. The WYE check valves work just awesomely the sump only rises about 2 inches when the power is turned off. So , so far working as planned. Only one leak and that was my fault ! Forgot to push the tube into John fitting comeing off the pump. Oops ! I will post some better pics when it's cleared up and we have some fish swimming around !! :oldman:

Well no ammonia spike and levels are pretty good after dumping all the enzyme 9 in. Have some medical issues comeing real fast so the boss wants it done. So added the fish and the coral today and got all 6 AI SOL super blues and 6 uv stunners up and running. Took a picture with the I Pad but it's not the best and the corals are just starting to open! They're in clean water shock I think LOL. Will try to get some dslr pics when everything opens up! Promise

I used the reef crystals which is the larger size. Call premium aquatics and they will not only recommend correct size for what you want to do but will calculate the amount you need. Great service all the way around

Thanks Jamie. The wide depth is really neat. The tank looks diffrent at every angle. Some coral you see from the front but you miss allott if you don't walk around it. This I believe will be our best tank ever ! It is practically silent too !

Well we got it pretty well stocked and situated now. The cycles a kickin in so the real work begins. The coral and fish seem happy and Mrs Binford is glad to have the room back to normal. Thanks Jamie. I am pretty happy with the results. The corals are really starting to open up and we're finding we didn't loose as much as we thought. Everything really shut down in the vats in the last week before we put them in the tank! Kat was really worried she lost all her acans but what do ya know they're all starting to come out. Whew --some of those cost some serious change. Tx for the compliments. :oldman:

Thanks Mike! I'm pretty happy with the tank overall. The dual flow inductors really create a ton of flow ! I'm running the vortech's at about 40%. Know what ya mean about the cedar ! Smells great in the tank room. :jester:

Well started to develop the fuge with plant life today. Stopped over at the trop and got some mangrove's. I have never used them but have been doing some reading and figured why not ! Can't hurt lol . I plan to get some more in the near future they're just a little pricey ! Slow and easy is the plan for now. Doaser are up and running and the rocks are starting to get good coralline now .Levels are looking good need to bump the alk up slowly to 9.5 ish tho getting around 8.2 presently but calcium is in the 400's and No3 is around 20 which is a little higher then I would like.Over all going well and started to feed LPS the fauna LPS food from cherry coral. This stuff gets great reaction from the coral during feeding. Highly recommend it. :oldman:

I have to tell you Binford for all the tanks you have build me through out our years this is the best one. I love the tank it looks sweet and its quiet. I love the fact I can set in the same room with the tank and don't have to have the tv blaring. Thank you for the tank I love it. :snorkel:

Been awhile since I have updated so here's some recent picks. All in all it's going pretty well. The rocks are really starting to purple up now. The enzyme 9 really worked well. The doaser's are keeping things very stable and maintaing alk and calcium well. 9 Dkh and 435 ca.I am now running carbon and GFO in both reactors.Coral are really flourishing and starting to show new growth everywhere.Fish seem to be very healthy and have only lost one blue chromis from the switch from the vats. Only issue has been the dang diamond gobys who just rearrange the sand bed on a daily basis. Never should have gotten 2 !! They're fast too !! No chance of getting them out,they taunt me constantly !! I know how Ahab felt now! LOL. :big_grin:

Well I was not getting the macro growth I was looking for with the usual shop light. So I found a 120watt 14k LED unit for a fair price and upgraded the fuge lighting ! The mangroves 's are loving it and the macro is growing like crazy ! Love it when a plan works out !

Well tcp316 gave the wife a very nice frag of Duncan. It is one of her favorites and the way she is force feeding it mysis it should take over the tank in a year. To say she likes it is an understatement ! Lol So here's the picture she wanted posted. Thanks again Vicki !

Well with the tank being seven months old now I decided to go see the fish doctors and found a new wrasse! Happy b day tank!! I also removed the toad stools from my orange cap. They we're getting so big the weight was splitting the colony apart. Looks strange not seeing them. Well here's some pics. I also went and saw Dknuckles and finished off the SPS island! Good seeing ya David and as always Awsome choices and very clean. I have never found anything on Dave's frags,always first rate and always great conversation :thumbsup:

Are you running a calcium reactor?

No calcium reactor. I run BRS two part and run my mag at 1600-1650. I really noticed a spurt in growth when I got the mag up and maintained it that high. I don't want people thinking the mag is miracle grow so I will explain my theory for the faster growth. I believe as many in Europe are saying with this method of doaseing high mag levels prevent the two part from bonding better then the standard 1300+ standard which is allowing the SPS to consume it much easier which in turn allows for faster skeleton formation. I also think the high protein and fat enriched food we make is helping a great deal also. Kinda like homemade steroids. LOL. Thanks for the compliment Chris. I really like your SPS rock also. :oldman:

The Emerald is doing well yet I've not see it eat the BA. Raising the Mag seems to have slowed it growth though :)

tx for asking Jamie. we have rearrange alittle to get Mrs.Binfords acans in a darker area.The orange cap colony has grown so much that one side of SPS island is now shadow land.Perfect for acans and the bleeding lava chalice.I am now moveing the sps effected by the cap to what was the acan island so we will soon have two SPS dominated islands! Woot Woot !!! The palleys are going nuts and over all very happy with growth. Been working a lot and got me a new toy so been slacking on the fourms. I plan to do a one year aniversary post tho in late october. Glad to hear the advice worked out for ya !!! hows the levels with kalkwasser going??? :oldman:
