Ok, I've now got enough money saved up for lighting so I can officially own a reef tank. Will this light work for a 55 gal long tank?

Probably unless you plan on getting clams or some other inverts with high light needs. Depth penetration would be my only concern with those fixtures. Here's a link to a DIY Metal Halide set-up. It would cost you about the same for two of these and you could keep just about anything, plus have the satisfaction that you made it.
