Buying sand from F&S and can't decide which size to get. In the other tank I have seaflor special grade reef sand, but it still mounds no matter where I place my Tunzes.

Has anybody had good luck with a larger size or am I looking for trouble? Does anybody make anything between seaflor and crushed coral size?

Or has anybody mixed the crushed coral with another size sand to make a more stable sub with success?

I did that for years in both aquariums, but didn't like the look after awhile. The coralline caked up and it always looked dirty. Pretty easy to clean though and a lot easier to deal with.

I have heard Tropic Eden sand is good and they have 4 sizes to pick from.Premium Aquatics sell it.Binford just used it in his new set-up.Ask him what size he used.

I would not go larger than 1-2mm grain size. From what I have read larger grain size will trap more dentritus and has the potential to cause nitrate problems. Also if you have any burrowing animals, they will rpobably prefer smaller grain size.

i appreciate both large an small size sands. why not mix a semi-fine and coarse grain sand. then it wont do as much blowing around yet the filtration aspect is still there. i almost mixed substrates for my 30 gal cube, but got lazy, went with really coarse stuff because i figured i dont care about nitrates in a planted tank.

I used Tropic Eden reeflakes and miniflakes in my 240. Worked out great.
