A friend of mine was walking on a beach near Cape Hatteras recently and found this washed up on shore. It was dead. Can anyone identify this fish?

I've added a couple more pictures that were taken.
It does look to be very long and skinny with fins running the entire length of it's belly.
Seems to be too skinny to be lionfish, and not sure about the goby. Right color...not sure if it gets that long (but I'm looking at the details). This is an average man's hand for scale.

I am with you. There are more species of goby than any other fish on the planet so odds are in your favor based on that alone.

So this fish is at least 6-8" in length. Definitely not the above mentioned goby.

My guess is some sort of blenny. Look up roughhead blenny, lizard blenny, and snake blenny. They are all similarly shaped.

I am leaning to the Blenny species also but engineer goby gets very long also. Wicked looking bugger either way ! Cool picture and a good brain teaser!

Looks close to the dragon or snake Blenny
