View Full Version : Nitrogen Cycle & Phosphate Test Kits
I'm starting out with a very basic reef tank but advancing with time. Should I spend the $100.00 for the master test kit or is that a waste of money.

As yor habit grows, so will your interest in different parameters... IMO, good idea to have a master test kit. The most important, though would be the following(in this order): Ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, phosphates(definitely essential during initial cycle)... then, once stable, a good hydrometer, PH, calcium, Alkalinity, and finally magnesium. Hope ya the best!!!

For just starting out the only test kits you will likely need are ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH. This will likely be the only things that will need testing during the first few months, after the cycle ammo and nitrite will likely not be used more than monthly at best. If you are using RO/DI water and regular water changes things like silicates and phosphates are likely no going to be an immediate issue either. The others (calcium, alkalinity...etc..) will come into play as you progress into a more populated reef.
The choice is really up to you... you may or may not need them, but testing never hurts anything.
Great Thanks Guys I love to splurge but at times it's good to peice it together.
