I've been reading about salt water aquariums and have been wanting to set one up for a while but I'm not sure how big i should make it the largest i want to go is 55g and the lowest I want to go is 30g
I've heard the smaller the tank is the harder it is to maintain and the only reason i want to go as small as 30g is because its cheaper.
So, what is your opinion Smaller or larger
Thanks,
Shawn :-)

IMO, the best beginner would be a 75 gl.

If you are not extremely fussy keep a constant eye out for a used tank, they can often be found for good deal with extras thrown in to make the sale. Folks are always upgrading something, tanks can generally be found local easy enough, (just be sure there has never been used to treat for ich (most ich remedies contain copper which is extremely toxic to marine life and very difficult to remove all traces of it)

BTW where are you located?

I have to agree with the general concensus,a 75 would be a better choice than a 55g for starters... the narrow 12" width of a 55 long can be very difficult to manage. We started with a 55, it lasted <3 months before we purchased a larger tank. The 55 has since been demoted to a rock curing tank.

I have a 20 gallon, my first fish tank ever (saltwater) and I have not encountered any major problems. I have zoo's and shroom's and a few other corals which are growing rapidly. I think if you dedicate yourself with the tank you have you'll be fine. I'm in the nano contest, I'll have new pics up soon so you can check it out.
