View Full Version : New to Reefing Switching from a feshy to a salty
Yes the wonderful world of Salt water has interested yet another. I have I 77g tank currently housing Chiclids. I've found a LFS that will give them a good home at a good price. (in my pocket) Would you guys recommend draining the tank and start with new water or would it be beneficial to use the water that's already being use. I understand that the bacteria for the salt is different than the fresh but would it aid the cycle process. I plan to cycle with just salt water then remove to a LARGE bucket so I can build my aquascape then put the water back in.
I would dump all the old water and start fresh and I would also go ahead and put your rock in as well....this way the rock can help your cycle.

I would agree on dumping the water and start from scratch. The bulk of the beneficial bacteria lives in the live rock and sand you will be adding.
Darn more work thanks LOL The reason I was going to start with salt for a few days then put in a container to build the aquascape is to fully disolve the salt. Easier in the tank that already has circulation. I was told that if I put in the rock then the water then the salt it could damage the LR

The salt water should be mixed outside of the tank in a separate container. If at all possible if it's allowed to set for a day or two (or more) with a powerhead (or airstone) and heater if needed it will get the chance to completely dissolve and any heavy elements will settle out. Also known as aging your water, it will also provide a more accurate measurement of the salinity.
