View Full Version : how much turnover is to much?

I am just about to buy some powerheads for the new tank. The setup I am planning is MASSIVE water movement! What I have in mind is 2 Seio M1100's and 1 Seio M820. That is 43 x turnover in my 70 gallon tank. Is that to much? Please note they will be on a wave machine so they won't all be on at the same time to often. What are considered the highest number of turnover that is acceptable? Thanks, DIRT

I would think that you could put as much flow in a tank as you want provided that it doesn't blow everything around.

I'm not sure how the SEIOs will like the wavemaker. Mine rattles pretty loud on startup for a half second.

Eric,
What are your thoughts on wave makers? I love my wave maker, but I also love the versatility of Seios and their ability to be pointed in any direction with that pivot mount. Should I just sell the wave machine? -DIRT

I think that your typical on/off powerhead wavemakers are a waste of money.

FWIW, I added the SEIO pumps to my store.

I wouldn't sell the wave machine just yet. You can always try it with the SEIOs to see how it works. There's a rumor out there that they're going to come out with a controller for the SEIO line. I'm guessing that it will feature some sort of "soft start" to eliminate the rattle of some pumps at startup. You could also go with something like a ReefKeeper from Digital Aquatics which I think has a "soft start" and also controls lighting and temp and stuff.

Cool Eric,I'll be getting a a pair of 820's off of you soon then.Dirt,43x isn't too much,I run 1700gph(42x) in my 40breeder and its barely enough.

I think I might do 4 of the M820s or two M820's and two M1100's ...I can't decide. Depends on what kind of deal I can find the PH's for I suppose. I already have one M820.

Well FWIW I have 2 M820s in my 55G and a great flow coming from my return pump. So much in fact I only run the 2nd M820 while the day lights are on. I have the M820s turned down a little, otherwise they would start picking up the bed and start blowing it around the tank with the water movement.

I'm pretty sure I am going to go with 2 M820's and 2 M620's. This tank is 30" deep, so I can shoot two or three of the pumps up high and avoid direct streams hitting the sand bed. I love the way these seios mount, so I am going to stick with them, if my Red Sea Wavemachine doesn't work, then out with it!

Dirt,i think that's a good choice to go with 4 of the SEIOS.5 water outputs is the minimum i would have in a reef tank.Since your going to have dual returns from your sump,that will give you 6.

I will try it once, if it buzzes real bad then I will get rid of the machine. It boasts about it's "soft start" abilities, which I think is hog-wash...but I really like that wave machine for feeding time and it's night mode.
I know it is tough on powerheads, and I have heard Seios don't like starting up...so we will just see how bad it is.
