So one of my 120G tanks wasn't looking so hot lately. About a week or so ago I sucked about a years worth of scum out of the sump. I think I got about 25 gallons of the nastiest water out of there. Usually when I do water changes I just suck detrius and stuff off the rocks in the display

Little did I know what a huge impact it would have on the tank. The tank went from borderline being taken down to looking fantastic. The only thing that I did was remove all the detrius in the sump.

Get your reef on!!

Would you recommend cleaning your refugium as well? My sump is bare bottom with considerable amount of flow so detrius is not a problem there but who know what is hiding under all of that chaeto in the fuge.

My sump was bare bottom too with a huge wad of chaeto in it, so it sounds similar to yours. I probably have somewhere in the neighborhood of 800-900GPH through the sump. On my other 120G tank, I did a massive cleaning of my refuge yesterday, so we'll see what if any effect sucking the detrius from the refuge in the coming week or so I guess.
