well....after much "figuring" and "checking", I have decided that to build a skimmer, I would be well over the "half cost" mark, have spent a lot of time that I could use doing other things, and possibly not have something as good as what I could buy.....soooo....

I'm just going to buy one....

the system I am setting up is a 110gal reef tank with a ~55gal refugium (will try to use as close to 100% of the sump area for fuge)....

what would be a good skimmer for this size? I was looking at either the ASM G3 (rated at 180gals) or G4 (rated at 250gals) as either one SHOULD be more than able to keep up with my system and yet are still short enough to fit in my cabinate (30" tall cabinate)....

is the G4 really worth the extra $100 in my application? I plan to have a lot of macro and filter feeder stuff in the tank and with my large refugium, can I get away with a "smaller" skimmer and still have to option to some day go SPS?

Get as big as you can afford. I've got a G3 and it wouldn't bother me at all if I had a G4 to be honest. I think that the gallon rating the ASM is a bit over-inflated, but a lot of products are that way.

I've also heard a lot of good things about the Coralife Super Skimmers, but I don't know if they'll be big enough for your needs.

how big of a sump do you have on your 120G?

I'm using an aquac ev 120 on my 120 with a 29g sump, i think it is a foolproof skimmer, set it , and clean it. thats it! and I think the price is great.
