I'm planning to have 3 yellow tangs in a 180g tank, how do I promote algae growth? The tank is new and has cycled for 3 months.

Time and patience. Maybe try finding some LR with the algae already growing on it. just my 2 cents.

I would not worry too much about alage growth too much that just comes with age and time.focus more on feeding your tangs prepaired foods for the most parts more hobbiest lose their tangs due to(malnutrition) lack of extra feedings relying soley on grazing.my best advice is to feed your tangs 3 times a day with an algae based foods with small amounts of meaty food i personally use thera+A pellets by spectrum 2 timess daily then a prepaired midday feeding is a combo of pellets and veggie flakes .frozen type variety of foods in the pm such as emerald entrese and formula 2 cubes plus other foods for all my fish deitary needs i hope this help. ps after speeking to head aquarium biolegist of the toledo zoo I found that green nori sheets contain very nutrient for herbivoes they reccomend the red variety over all of them

as said in all the other posts ... i would just let nature take its course, you'll have more algea than you can shake a stick at soon enough.
