View Full Version : Temperature/ Heater Heater stopped working
Today after being gone all day I went to do a water change on my tank my son put his hand in the water and said the water was freezing I check the temp and it was at 65. I have moved all my coral that I could to his tank and only have 3 fish in there will they be ok or should I move them to his tank. The problem is that he has two clowns in his and 2 in mine don't know how that would go atleast all the coral seem to be doing good :shake-head:

I would raise the temperature gradually with your new heater. During power outages my tank has gotten to 68 degrees and everybody made it. I think it is a greater stress to move everybody around and risk clownfish wars. It sounds like you caught it in the nick of time!
Give your son a pat on the back too.
Thanks for the advise I am going to invest in a apex work has been crazy and I have not been doing as much with my tank. At least I didn't lose anything but lesson learned no matter how tired take some time with your tank or have a chance of losing everything

A quick fix would be to float a few plastic bottles full of warm water while you go out to purchase a new heater. It's not a bad practice to replace your heaters annually. It's not a huge expense and gives you that peace of mind. Just my two cents but this has seemed to work well for me.
I had another heater fail this is the third in a month I have no idea why. I checked my voltage it is 120v it plugs in tight and the light stays on the heater just stops working any ideas?

Do you have a grounding probe in your tank? There could be a chance that stray voltage is burning it out.
I just had one go out last night and had to get a new one today. I ordered a back up, this is one thing that is very cheap but can cause tons of headaches when they go out.

i never di like that heater, just not a fan of glass heaters, though im a hypocrite because i run one now because its all i could get last minute. those are warranted for life though.

i like the aqueon pro heaters, the 250W is what i have on my frag system and its what i used to use on my 90 gal display. there are other good heaters out there as well that i simply havent tried yet.

Get two heaters designed to heat a tank 60-70% of yours volume. Run them both at the same time. If one goes out, you will still at least be keeping the water warmer with the second... Ofttimes too, when heaters fail - they fail "open", and overheat a tank. By using two undersized heaters, the second one will turn off and you won't risk boiling your livestock.

I've switched over to the Cobalt Neo Therm Heaters. They have a plastic housing so breakage concerns are less. I also use one on the CR Frag & Swag tank...less likely to break if it is bumped or dropped during setup or tear down. Although I use my Apex to control the heater, the built in thermostats seems more accurate than most.

Jimsflies- Preuss confirmed for me this week that the Cobalt Neos don't play nice with Apex (we have had issues with our Neos and in troubleshooting, Cobalt confirmed the concern). The Apex is believed to interfere with the heater electronics when plugged into a controlled outlet or on the same circuit.
I am swapping out the Neos this weekend.
