Anyone want to guess what this annoying stuff is? I don't think it is your everyday hair algae. I would like to get rid of it though.

Maybe it is just green hair algae. This stuff is really annoying. I have started phosguard and will probably get a bio pellet reactor online soon.

I have the same crap growing in my tank....its incredibly invasive. Dont know what it is for certain though....

Mine was connected, and spread, by a long single/multiple stems. I think settled detrius causes it to thrive....

I have plenty of settled detritus in my sump. Probably time to siphon that crap out.

Byropsis maybe. Just for gp try raising your mag levels using Kent Tech-M to 1600. Keep it there for 2 weeks see what happens.

bryopsis for sure, that stuff sucks!

AHHHH. Good call on the bryopsis. After some research that is what I have been dealing with. Tomorrow I will start raising my magnesium levels...after I figure out what the level is. I also read that a sea hare was mentioned. I might get one of them too. I haven't had one of those in almost 10 years.

unless things have changed greatly in my brief escape from reef keeping that stuff is bad enough to consider throwing the rocks it is growing on away. you can play with mag levels and such to try to hinder further growth but i would treat it like cancer. cut out what you can and cut out whatever else you see grow. my 2 cents.

No need for such drastic measures anymore. The Kent Tech-M works great on eradicating this nasty algae. Plus the extra mag is good for LPS/SPS growth :)

ive used brightwell magnesion to clear it up. ive also used a sea hare. sold that guy back to the fish store for more than i paid when i was done with him, this was way back when i first started though.

i would start with mag, i heard many reports of people bringing their mag up to 1800ppm to kill the bryopsis with no ill effects to the coral and other life.

bubble algae can be controlled with various crabs, but is harder than bryopsis.

Cowrey snails work just as good as sea hares, but don't die when the algae is gone. 5 Emerald crabs in my 26 gallon cube that was completely covered in bubble algae was spotless in a week.

1 Emerald died in my tank without touching 1 bubble-lol

i have never trusted emerald crabs...

I never had any problems with my emerald crabs. I heard of them possibly going after polyps like zoos and pallys, but never seen it. Not saying it's not true, just never seen it. I've had many tanks for 14 years and owned a saltwater store for 4 and still didn't see it.

I ordered some Kent Tech M on Amazon a few minutes ago, I love being a prime member. Hopefully this will help solve the issue.

It works. The algae will start to turn white then you can pick it of or let it fall off. Good luck. :)

I should have looked at a calculator before I bought the Tech M. It will take almost the entire bottle to raise my mg 100ppm. Looks like I will be using magnesium chloride from now on.

Magnesion from Brightwells worked 100x better than tech m for me when I was trying to raise the mag up to 1500. Mine started out at 1270 and got it up to 1500 with in using the first container.it took bottle after bottle of tech m to raise it and the mag level always seemed to drop pretty fast.

I remember laughing so hard as I first read Bob's great adventure with Bryopsis.

I just ordered a gallon of Tech M. That little 16oz bottle didn't last very long.

Amazing how much it takes to raise it right?!
