Ever get the night shift?

It's 12:15 am...I normally go to bed BEFORE 11 pm.

Which brings me to my question, you ever have something happen that makes you stay up to keep an eye on your tank? Just happened to me...I found 3" of standing water in my stand as I was about to go to bed. My surge protector was almost submerged...so I had to unplug most of my equipment, including my chiller.

I just got it all cleaned up, and there are paper towels stacked knee high in the corner, all the towels are soaked in saltwater, there are cords, and equipment all over the living room...AND I AM SCARED TO LEAVE IT ALONE NOW!

I THINK the flood happened because I didn't put the O-ring on right on this canister filter I am borrowing...but what if I am wrong!?!? What if there is a crack in my sump, or in my tank, what if my top off line is leaking? HOLY CRAP....I am so tired. I am going to babysit it for another hour, then I am going to pass out.

Then I get to get up first thing in the morning and go to home depot for a new surge protector! YIPPY...

You ever get stuck in this sort of predicament?

For the same reason we all fear going on vacation or leaving for a day.... all the 'What If's' come into mind continually.

I hope that you figured things out and I also hope that it was a simple fix. I had a little jolting experience this weekend that leaves me to find a new way of doing things. You can never be too safe or predict what will happen. Water and electricity is a fun mix. Honestly, you can do things for years without a problem and then one morning it can all go horribly wrong.

Been there, done that... only mine ended in a fire on my surge protector on just ONE of those occasions.

I melted my surge protector... came out of the living room wondering what that burnt smell was and there was a disastor

Hope you were able to find and fix you little problem. Seem that the safest place for a surge protector is mounted to the ceiling or on the wall above the level of the water.

I always try and mount my surge strips up and out of the way. Also I would recommend a drip loop for all cables, which is basically a little extra cord hanging down below the socket. That way if a drip runs down the cord, it doesn't run right into the socket.

I had my powerhead mounted up nicely on the inside of the stand, with drip loops that were all zip tied together...then one of the screws came out that was holding the surge protector and it just laid in the bottom of the stand...until the other night. My new is back up and mounted out of the way.
