I just came home to a heater explosion, our frogspawn, all the ricordea and the rest of the corals near the top of the tank do not look well at all but most of our fish seem to have made it, haven't seen our pink spotted goby and our pistol shrimp yet. I'm not sure what to do next, large water change? any help is appreciated! :(

I have no idea, I came home after being gone most of the day and there were shards of glass everywhere and a burnt looking hole in the heater.

I have used only Titanium heaters in my systems for about 12 years now and would never go back to a glass heater of any kind or make.

I agree with running carbon and water changes to get things back in shape.

Which brand of Titanium heaters do you use? I get a few different options when I type it into amazon. The tank is looking pretty awful and the whole thing is depressing, hopefully it turns around soon!

I have been using the Via Aqua heaters. They have a separate controller and a separate temp sensor which I have found to be very accurate. A lot of reefers use the Won and Finnex brands too.

Hope not alot of reefers are using Won heaters....I knew they used to, but thought everyone know better these days. They are as inacurate and unreliable as my spelling....

So as of today our ammonia is still up, we're doing lots of water changes and running carbon but the die off has continued, we've now lost our torch, xenia, frogspawn, hammer, toadstools, hermit crabs and our bubble tip anemone. The fish are all still alive as are the candy canes and duncans. I've been cleaning out all of the dead stuff but the ammonia remains high, wondering how much longer the survivors will be able to handle this. I've been doing a lot of reading and apparently having a marineland heater explode is not uncommon. Ugh.

Update* We kept testing our ammonia with the API kit and it was reading 1ppm so we decided to make a trip to Preuss and have them check it out, turns out our water is all good and so we must have been getting a false reading here at home. We did have ALOT of stuff die but the few mushrooms, candy canes and our gsp and duncans are all looking like they have recovered from our little disaster, the tank is quite bare compared to what were used to but we ordered a new ViaAqua titanium heater and are thankful that all of our fish survived.

I definitely will never buy another glass heater, I'm sorry to hear you had the same thing happen!

I had two marineland heaters explode on me too. Will never use or recommend again.
