Ok,
I have had my tank up and running for about 6 months of something like that. 4 months ago I put a pistol shrimp in the tank. I have never seen it since, and I made a major mistake about 1 month ago and got my tank up to 93 degrees for 2 days. Killed every invert that I had. However, I keep hearing that snapping sound that pistol shrimps make. I suppose he could have somehow been the only invert to survive the heat wave...but it seems unlikly since he was BY FAR the smallest invert I had. He was only about 1/2" when I put him in the tank. Does anything else make that noise? Would an emerald crab be able to snap like that?

I have never heard a emerald crab make a popping sound. I betting it is your pistol shrimp. They are pretty tough. Check out this thread.

I want the mantis if you have one :)

Now..to the original question.. My guess... your pistol is just fine and snap happy. Remember, they are tough AND have a serious "buffer" to help them. It is no accident that they burrow. It's the safest place in the world for them. In their den, they are safe from predators, swings in salinity and temperature etc.

For all the time I've been in the hobby (not long as compared to my general aquaris) I have learned lots. The most impressive thing I've learned thus far is that if treated right, our reef tanks can really withstand a LOT of adversity! The fish, corals, inverts are a little tougher than we think they are. Again, especially if properly cared for!

Your pistol shrimp is no doubt the one making the noise. You may have put one in your tank but most come in as hitchhikers. Think of all the stuff they live through to come to you in LR. They are tough as nails.
