Is algae really the root of all evil in our tanks?

Why are there so many threads where people ask "What is this horrible stuff and how do I get rid of it?"

Is it possible that maybe we don't know a good thing when we see it?

Suzy, I haven't seen many (actually any that I can think of) macro algae hater threads over here.

What types are you refering to that people dislike?

Thanks, JoJo. That is very kind of you.

Renee, I did not mean to insinuate that this site does not appreciate macroalgae. I was hoping that a thread discussing the virtues, benefits and basic gorgeousness of algae could start here.

Sorry, just a silly botched joke. I am a Democrat, after all!

I have macro in all my tanks. My fuzzy lion tank is the BEST! I even have some nusiance algae that is in there because it's purdy. It hasn't grown out of control at all and I'm sure it's because of all the competition.

We are starting a Pipefish lagoon and of course the macro is essential. To supply it and other tanks we are going to start some algae prop tanks.

There are tanks were it doesn't belong IMO, except maybe in the sump.

I don't know if I REALLY want to admit this, but...
I have some various algaes growing here and there, and I have not removed them. Why? I find them interesting! I KNOW I wouldn't remove any as pretty as what you've shown in your pics, Suzy!!!

Why would you want to remove the macro.... or are you talking about nuisance algae that you've let be?

Suzy if you let Angel near that tank for 2 mins quite a few of your algaes will be voting absentee!! We love them... in the display (and sump).

I have some brown sargassum in the display and i like it a lot, the mandrine hunts in there. It tears out easy when it takes up to much space. I have some grape caulerpa that is pretty but it spreads very fast so i tear it out of the display as it seems like it could take over.

Not nuisance algae, lol. I haven't tried to identify what it is, but as long as it's not growing so much as to overtake anything, I'm fine with letting it be. I think it adds interesting texture to the tank!

I let the large valonia stay put. Do you have a pic of your algae?

I WAS TOLD THAT ALL ALGAES ARE GOOD AS LONG AS IT ISN'T SMEAR OR HAIR. IS THAT RIGHT?

I will admit that my pony corral is a hot bed for hair algae... I keep it in check, when it gets long, stringy etc...but the "tufts" are actually quite pretty. Unfortunately, after losing much of my macro algae (long story) the hair algae has become the dominant species. However, I am collecting (as donated) more macro and hope to reverse the cycle such that I have more colorful macro and fewer areas of hair algae.

For what it's worth, when I do pull out the HA, I find TONS of pods in it. My mandarin looks at me when I harvest it with a "Hey...what the heck are you doing" attitude :)

I Love any red algaes. I had a nice collection of a few different kinds untill I had to give it all away with the seahorses. Now I have to start all over. It's a good thing I had a few pieces in another tank I could swipe for the new 75g. tank. Grrrr....

That's one of the prettiest tanks I have ever seen. Congrats. Someday mine will get there. It looks like seahorse heaven.
