hey I have a question if I use 100% live rock and live sand instead of mixing them with dead stuff, will the tank not get as much alge? my tank only has algae blooms on the base rock which was dry and not on the live rock.

If your live rock has coralline algae on it, I've noticed that other algaes don't tend to grow over it. Maybe that has something to do with it. Other than that, I don't really have an answer for you. :)

My best guess.... it would depend on the actual composition of the base rock...
We've got a few hundred pounds of what they called Tufa rock (very lightweight and so pourus water will litterly run through it) never much nusiance algae but rapidly covered with coraline. Other Lace rock we have had wet for over a year hasn't really colored up much, and tends to grow a bit more HA and the like...
Just my guess and what we've seen thus far.

Need to get rid of any of that? :)

We haven't decided what we are going to do with it all yet... I've got rubbermaid tubs scattered around the basement filled with LR, water, and a powerhead. The problem is the day after I get rid of some or all of it the 'tank of our dreams' will fall into our laps and we'd be starting over from scratch.

No biggie. I'm starting a 40B at work in the next month or two and I'd like to get some decent rock in there without having to buy any top-shelf LR. I've got some LR at home that's pretty much dead now. I don't need a heck of a lot, just some stuff with interesting shapes. I'll keep my eyes peeled. :)

I ain't too good at math, but I think that shipping would be less than me coming to Kentucky. :)
