View Full Version : jimsflies NEW Invert Ranch

Finally, I'm going to start the new tank! My current tank, a Biocube 29, was supposed to be temporary...but I've had that same tank now for 5 years! Here is a link to the thread:

http://www.captivereefs.com/forum/members-reefs/jimsflies-invert-ranch-7390/

At the time of setting that up, I actually wanted an Innovative Marine 38 gallon tank...but due to scoring a deal on the Biocube I set that up instead. Last Summer, I finally got the IM38...I drove up to Houghton Lake and purchased it from larryandlaura. However, because of house projects I wasn't sure where I could set it up that it wouldn't be in the way...so it sat in the corner empty. In the mean time, I also traded larryandlaura for an Alternative Reef structure that fit in the IM38. Although I felt that I would like more room around the structure (its fairly large).

Then last November I went to the Aquatic Experience show in Chicago and for the first time saw the JBJ 45 gallon cube. It was a couple inches larger in width and length than the IM38 gallon and I thought it looked pretty sharp. So I sold the IM38 and picked up the JBJ 45. I've had the tank sitting (empty) on the floor since the first of the year.

But now that I am wrapping up some of the house projects and had my uncle build a stand for me, I am excited to finally get it setup and move most of my existing stock into it. What I'm really looking forward to, is this will be my first tank in the living room. My previous tanks were either in my fly tying room or a large utility closet...which admittedly wasn't bad because I could be a mess (spills, wires not neatly routed, pile of frag plugs on the shelf next to it, etc.) and not really worry about it too much. But I am really excited about being able to sit in a comfortable chair and be able to see my tank...and also watch tv or be on CaptiveReefs.

My plan right now is to try to leave the Biocube running as a frag tank to help with keeping frags to give away on the CR Frag & Swag wheel (http://www.captivereefs.com/forum/cr-announcements/spin-frag-and-swag-wheel-sunday-a2swap-32983/?highlight=frag+swag). Ultimately for this to work out, I'm going to need to add another top off and expand the apex so that I can automate the frag tank (I will be moving most of my equipment to the JBJ 45).

I'll update this thread in the next few days with photos and details as I start to set it up.

Yeah I'm pretty geeked about this new tank. I'm pretty sure I can fill the tank with whats in my existing tank right now...but I would like to get a few new more colorful pieces.

It will be nice to have more space. The softies are so thick in the biocube, I can only see about 6 inches into my tank. Before the view is completely obscured with coral mass. To see the coral toward the back of the tank, I have to look top down.

I'll also frag some of the pieces when I move them. It will be nice to have a separate tank for that. The last time I went nuts fragging the green nepthia, it apparently released toxins that killed a bunch of stuff.

I'm getting closer to getting some water in the new tank. Need to paint the walls in the corner where the tank is going and should be able to get some water in there very soon. I'm probably not going to wait very long to move existing stock over to the new tank since I'll be moving established rock.

I was hoping to be a bit further along with getting the tank setup. I still need to paint the corner the tank will be sitting in.

Once I get the tank set in its spot, the photos will commence. :gallery:

Finally, getting the room put back together. The walls are painted and tank is in place. I would have filled it with water, but my wife wants to get the carpet cleaned first. So will wait until next week to fill.

But here are a couple preliminary photos showing its spot and the stand:

Excited to follow the build. I set up a jbj 20 in January as a frag tank and love it. If I were gonna do a second full tank with fish it would be a jbj 45. I modded a filter sock behind the overflow, it definitely helped polish the water. Something to consider while you are still setting it up!

I filled my new tank with water...only to realize it wasn't level in the corner when I pushed it into position (the stand is mounted on casters). :( Yes, I should have checked that first with the tank in final position. I ordered some adjustable feet so that I can level it, but still have the ability to move on the casters if necessary.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71TIMWmGb%2BL._SL1000_.jpg

These feet can be mounted under the tank and drill a hole for an Allen wrench to adjust. However, I'm going to mount outside of the stand because the casters would be in the way in the corners. I'll paint them to match so I think it will look fine and allow fairly easy adjustment as well as the ability to raise the legs so it can be moved on the casters if necessary. (When doing this, I would drain the tank at least 50% to reduce stress on the tank.)

jimsflies

The leveling feet should be delivered today. With any luck I can get some water flowing this evening.

jimsflies
05-08-2015, 12:00 PM
The tank now has water flowing! The leveling feet are installed and the tank is level.

Depending on how its looking, I may try to move some of the live stock over this weekend. I think between moving established rock and dosing bacteria I should be able to move quickly with transferring everything to the new tank.

I'll get some updated photos tomorrow.

Finally out of the closet!

I still have some fish to catch and a rack of corals to move over. I haven't moved the apex and osmolator to the new tank yet either.

The aqua scaping isn't too bad for a first pass. But I'm sure it will need some tweaking. Here are a few photos:

looks like the top left slides out of your stand, is that for your apex?

jimsflies
05-19-2015, 08:31 AM
Yeah, I'm going to mount all the control equipment and outlets on that slide out...or at least that's the plan.

I moved a few more corals and a fish over to the new tank last night. (Its hard to find time with Noah in Lacrosse...he's had 9 games in the last week.) I still have a large rock that I need to frag off the corals and a handful off green banded gobies that I need to catch and transfer over. Corals were starting to look a little better last night. Hopefully tonight I can get the remaining livestock moved over.

With the crappy weekend weather, I spent some time working on getting all the equipment (top off, apex, etc) moved to the new tank. I was reminded of how many wires my system has as I pulled them from the tank into the back of the stand. With all the home improvement I've been doing, I've become pretty decent at pulling wires...which was a good thing considering the number of wires that needed to be run from the tank into the back of the stand. The top left shelf of the stand definitely isn't pretty in terms of how many wires are in crammed in there but I did manage to mount all the apex equipment on the pull out shelf.

I had the first spill on the carpet next to the tank...didn't realize I had inadvertently pulled the top off line out of the back of the tank. The Osmolator had pumped a gallon of RO water on the carpet before I realize the line was laying on the floor. :( I will put a zip tie on it so it can't be pulled as easily.

This is it: basically some thin pvc sheet I got from my work with a smaller back piece superglued to it to help keep it wedged in. I used my bandsaw and cut a couple slots for the return. I also coated it with krylon black spray paint. For free I'm not complaining.

Cool mod. So that fits tight enough that most of the flow goes through the sock and not down the sides of the mounting plate?

One thing I've found that works well and is easy to cut is the plastic corrugated sign board material. Looks like you did a great job cutting out the circle and slots.

guzzlo
06-02-2015, 09:32 AM
Yeah i cut it out pretty close to exact (4 1/2*4 7/8 I believe) and then cut the back corners out to accommodate the silicone on the inside of the jbj tank. Water leakage is pretty minimal if any that I can see and you could always silicone the mod in but I haven't went that route for future cleaning/maintenance purposes.

The slots and circle weren't too bad to cut with my old bandsaw and any Imperfections in the circle are covered by the top of the filter sock.

Long term negative effects would be the sock overflowing and having nowhere to drain, but I'll just remove it when I'm gone for long periods of time and pray for the best in the meantime!

jimsflies
06-02-2015, 10:22 AM
Given these are all-in-one tanks, I don't think it would overflow. With that said, I'm surprised they made the baffle as tall as the divider wall of the tank. Does the frag tank have two overflow locations? The 45 has two of them (one on each side).

No my frag tank just has the overflow on the left top and spraybar for a return on the bottom right. It would have made sense to cut down the first baffle a little up top as a fail safe for overflowing

Your tank is coming along great btw, I'm loving that rockwork!

Not sure...I'd like another fish or two. Tried a couple fish that didn't pan out (one wouldn't eat and the other disappeared immediately).

Also on the look out for more unique soft corals and photosynthetic gorgonians.

Now that things are filling in, I'm also thinking I need more lighting. Considering adding a second Kessil.

You prefer the Kessil's? Is there any other way of controlling them?

Oops...just noticed your question. Yes, they have a separate controller for them: Kessil Controller (http://www.kessil.com/aquarium/Accessories_Spectral_Controller.php)

I like the lights. I think my corals have been doing well with them. I am finding that I would like more than a single spotlight. As my corals are growing in, I'm getting some shadowing. I think if I add another light, it would open up more locations that I can put corals and they will get enough light. The new AP700 would be just the ticket I think...but not interested in spending $900 on lighting. So I guess I will add another 360 and figure out how to make it look good over the tank.

I think the coloring of my palys is pretty good under these lights.

I agree Jim, I think another Kessil would be a good way to open up more spots. I bet you could make something pretty easy to use the current gooseneck, you would just need a piece of Aluminum U channel to attach the lights to, then attach that to the gooseneck. I bet it would be less than $20 for all the pieces, and misc. hardware. (screws, nuts, flat black spray paint.)

jimsflies
01-10-2016, 12:59 PM
I'm not sure one gooseneck would work with the weight. Kessil makes this rigid mount now:

http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/aZcAAOSwo3pWciGj/s-l1600.jpg

http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/UpEAAOSwJcZWciGv/s-l1600.jpg

I'm thinking if I could get an adapter made that would mount into the front of that and then reach out maybe 6 inches on each side and then mount to that, that would look okay.

But need to figure out how/who/where to get such an adapter made that won't look to "homemade". I'd like to get my hands on one just to know for sure how that piece fits into the front of the mount.

I'm also a little concerned about how dangerous it is to mount lights to the back panel though. The flexible goose neck would absorb and impacts to the light where as a rigid mount like that if bumped could result in more force on the back panel of the glass. Has anyone heard about any horror stories with lights mounted on the back panel? Seems like a lot of manufacturers are making their mounts like this.

MizTanks
01-10-2016, 01:26 PM
I've heard no horror stories and I'm pretty much all over the forums.

As for your concern on the back glass, you could always add a piece of plexi in between the mount and the glass.

2. Added some frozen food, and waited a minute. I snapped this photo right as he was going into the trap.

11411

3. Success...

11412

I had planned to possibly re-release the dottyback in a week or two, but I can now see how relaxed some of the other fish in the system (especially the small green banded gobies are now that dottyback is gone). The clownfish also seem to be showing some mating behaviors since the dottyback's been in time out...since Sunday morning.

So I may end up rehoming him...anyone in Lansing area interested?

The new tail spot is getting some grief from the clownfish and the algae blenny too. I knew the algae blenny would be a risk. I'm evaluating if the algea blenny needs to go as well. Fish are such a pain in the butt...I prolly should leave well enough alone, but get a bit bored with seeing the fish all the time.

Here's a photo of the two blennies getting to know each other...

I'm amazed at how long I've had my present fish. 3 for over a year and the other 2 about 6 months. So far they're all happy. Kinda waiting for the 6 line to turn rouge, he does make my watchmen move every now and then but nothing major.
Love the Tailspots. Very nice addition Jim [emoji2]

Thanks @MizTanks (http://www.captivereefs.com/forum/members/miztanks/). All the fish other than the algae blenny were moved from my old tank last spring. I think I've had the clowns for 3 years (http://www.captivereefs.com/forum/members-reefs/jimsflies-invert-ranch-7390-post163898/#post163898) (got them at MCES 2013 from @BooyahsReef (http://www.captivereefs.com/forum/members/booyahsreef/)). The neon dottyback for 2 or 3 years. Hard to remember...I was trying to find a photo or mention in my old tank thread.

I don't think the photo in my last post above was displaying correctly but I think its fixed now.

Just for fun, here's my old tank from about 3 years ago.

What type of shrimp do you have? Mine paired up within a day. I was concerned the watchman wasn't going to make it before I got the shrimp...it was getting picked on and wasn't eating. But as soon as I got the tiger pistol and they paired up, the goby started doing better.

These are phone pics from my galaxy S4... I was looking at the S7 yesterday. I wonder how much better the photos would be on the new model?

I will be there on Sunday I will be on crutches or a knee scooter. I'm coming to pick up a few things. I so need to get out of the house after having achillies tendon repair surgery. A tendon transfer to repair damaged tendon! How can I find you to get the frag from you if it's still available. Thanks Tim

Not sure how much I trust the waterproofing on the S7.

I am in the middle of a remodel and had to move the tank. I took the main rock out and put it in my old biocube to make room for the new "rock" structure.
