This summer I rinsed and dried about 20 lbs of 2mm sand that I had in my tank before I moved. I left the nice, clean white sand in a rubber maid tub in my tool shed with out the lid on. I recently noticed that my cat has decided that the tub should be used as cat box. Grrrrr. So the question is, is the sand garabage or can thorough rinse and clean the sand again for later use?

trash it ... you would have to probably bleach it to remove the crap that is in it now. (no pun intended ... well yes there was).

I say sift out the "poop" and rinse well(no bleach though). With the fecal matter removed and the urin(heavy in nitrates is about it) removed, it should be fine. That's just my take though.

by my logic (however flawed that may be) just rinseing it out should be okay after all like greg said it is just biological matter not much differance between fish poop

Thanks for the input everyone. I think I will set it out on a old window screen, pick the big pieces out, and let the Oregon rain rinse it for a couple months. I will probably add it in slowly to prevent any major spikes.

Sounds reasonable.

Any way to block it off to be certain your cat doesn't re-use it when you're not looking?

You could make a phone call to the local Chinese restaurant- kitty might be on the menu...

ONLY KIDDING!!! I love my cat to pieces, and while I'd beat her senseless if she did that to my sand, I'd still be kissing her by nightfall!

This happened too me recently when I set up my 180. The cat jumped about 5 feet on the ledge then down into her new expensive litter box. Of course I didn't realize this until I got home that nite and saw all the cat tracks in the new sand. I wasn't about to waste sand at $20 a bag plus shipping. So I rinsed with water and all is good, plus I figure a little cat pee to 200 plus gallons of water with the sump, etc.
