I kinda hated going with the powerheads due to the extra heat, and the extra shock risk, but I can't really come up with any other way to get flow in the tank since I'm not using a sump.... Ahh! I could drill it and create a mini CLM couldn't I?!... I'll think about that.
I'm going to use that hotb filter as a mini-refuge. I also orderd a surface skimmer for that. (thanks jojo!)
I plan on going either tonight or tomorrow and getting the wood to start building my stand. I'm working on the design of that right now!
I'm also in the process of playin email-tag with one of the ro/di manufacturers and trying to decide which one to order from them.
Kinda alot goin on right now to just get the ball rolling! Hopefully, I'll be able to stay on top of it all! I just wanted to give you an update. I'll update this thread as the project progresses!
Wish me luck!

IMO One Moonlight will be more than sufficient for your tank. I have 3 on a 55gallon and its alot, your going to have 4 on a 20?
I also think one powerhead will be sufficient too.

I've heard bad things about the nano fission skimmer over on nano-reef.com
jojo22

I think that two powerheads is a great idea if he is looking at sps if the not so distant future. If he is doing only softies and lps I would then agreee that one is enough.

As long as you keep up in new airstones (cheap don't worry) that would work GREAT!!! Might be cheapeer than the one I posted also!!

I guess I'll try it, and if it sucks as bad as everyone is saying, i'll try the berlin..
As far as the lunar lights Fatman, I wasn't sure how much light they put out, and couldn't find anything on that model as far as a guide goes. So, i figured i'd rather be safe and have a spare, than not have enough.
Thanks for the feedback everyone!... I'll keep you all posted!

Thats a decent price, comes out to around 4 to 4.50 when you include shipping. LR usually doesnt have to go over night, so get the slowest available.

UPDATE!!!!
Alright! Here goes! The order above has arrived! Everything looks good. I'm in the office right now, so I'll take pix of it all later tonight when I get home.
I've also gone out and bought the tank and a Top Fin heater.
I decided to go with a 20 High, instead of the 20L. I liked the looks of the dimensions alot more, and thought it would do better for rock scaping.
Dimensions: 24L x 12.25W x 16.5H
I've also started building the stand! I originally build the frame 3 inches too deep AND 3 inches too tall. (Its supposed to be 36" tall, 29" wide and 20.5" deep.) So, I had to correct all of that. It was an easy 15 min fix. The frame is made of 2x4's and will be covered w/ 3/4" stain grade oak plywood.
Total project cost so far:
$266.00
Pics to come tonight! Thanks for following along!

WOW sounds nice only thing I would have done different is sticking with the 20L. It is easier to get light to the bottom with a shallow tank and I think longer tanks are easier to scape as you can stretch the rock out over the length instead of stacking. But I'm sure you have a vision in your head and I for one can't wait to see it come to life. GOOD LUCK AND GIVE US SOME PICS!!!

Just a word on the Fission Skimmer... I'm sorry I just now saw this thread! I would've chimed in sooner!

I bought the skimmer for my 10g from Pet Solutions, and after a couple of weeks of tinkering I just couldn't get it to work right. I called Pet Solutions, and they suggested I call the manufacturer. Current told me that these skimmers were specifically designed to go in the AquaPods and would be extremely difficult to "tweak" properly for a standard tank. Pet Sloutions told me to send it back to them and happily (and promptly) refunded my money.

Perhaps Foster & Smith will be as kind for you...
Iconz
11-21-2006, 08:28 PM
yeah, they will. I asked them the day it shipped out if they take returns (and they do) So, I've just gotta ship it back to them. Thanks for the tip!

Just make sure their balanced, if not you'll need to add a piece of foam or other soft material for the tank to distribute its weight evenly.

Yeah, the top (and sides) are gonna be covered with 3/4" oak. I'm gonna put adjustable legs on the bottom of it to make sure it stays level.

FYI JD: Your lights are going out today UPS. I'll shoot you the tracking number when I get it. It's 2 separate ballasts. I used 2 timers to make the blue bulbs go on earlier than the whites, and stay on later too for a dawn/disk effect.
Let me know if you have any questions.

I hate to burst your bubble right now since you are just getting started. I have one of those Fision Nano Skimmers. It works well for about an hour then it's full. Once it's full you have to empty it. You will be emptying it about every hour. You will be better off getting a bigger or make sure you have an overflow tank to allow the skimmer to drain on it's own. I had one attached to mine and it worked okay. But once I put a larger one on my tank it cleaned it a hundred times better. Go to the nano build off and look for mine. There is a pic that you can see it on. It was just a new over flow bottle from a radiator overflow. You can use just about anything. For a while I used a one liter waterbottle. Be creative.

Alright, This brings me to another question. which skimmer should I go with?
Keep in mind my tank is only a 20gal High, and i have no sump. I'll be using the HOTB aquaclear filter for a fuge....
Typhoon Hang on Skimmer (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=13910&N=2004+113771)
Coralife 65gal Model (http://www.petsolutions.com/Coralife+Needle+Wheel+Skimmer-I-96333000-I-C-99999-C-.aspx)
Seaclone 100 Skimmer (http://www.petsolutions.com/Seaclone+100+Skimmer+with+Pump-I-51308112-I-C-43-C-.aspx)
These are 3 that I've found that fit in my budget, and I think may work. Any other sugguestions?

Alright Guys! Its time for yet another update!!!
I don't have a whole whole lot to report, but there is some!
First of all, I did recieve 2 shipments in today. One being my RO/DI unit, and the other being my retro 4x24w T5 light kit. I haven't done anything with the lights yet, that will wait until I make the canopy for the tank. I have however installed and ran my RO/DI unit!
As discussed in my RO/DI (http://www.captivereefing.com/showthread.php?t=4039)thread, I have connected it to the washing machine cold line and the drain also shares the washing machine drain... Works great!
Here's some PIX!

http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o101/iconz_reef/RO_DI_Unit005.jpg
This thing really was a breeze to put in! I only had to tighten 1 canister and re-run 1 line due to very small leaks.
Tap water TDS: 132
RO only water TDS: 1
RO/DI water TDS: 0
Success!
Also! I placed what I hope to be two of my last non-live stuff orders today.
The first is a Refractometer (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=9957&N=2004+113074) from Drsfostersmith.com
I also orderd 2 Red Sea Master Test Kits today. I got the Marine (http://www.petsolutions.com/Marine+Master+Test+Kit-I-30721100-I-C-46-C-.aspx) and the Reef (http://www.petsolutions.com/Reef+Master+Test+Kit-I-30721200-I-C-46-C-.aspx) one. These both should come in very handy! The last thing I picked up today was a Coralife Needle Wheel Skimmer (http://www.petsolutions.com/Coralife+Needle+Wheel+Skimmer-I-96333000-I-C-1-C-.aspx)65g model. (sorry eric)
Next to last, I have made a little bit of progress on the stand. I've got a unique way that I am doing the front of it that is taking some time. I'll get you all some pics on that in the next couple of days!
And, finally... This is what my wife has now set as her desktop backgrond just as a joke to pick on me and my nerdiness!

Hope you enjoyed!

Alright, small update! I've found a steal on some computer fans online at NewEgg.com... 10 highly reviewed / rated fans for 11.90 (free shipping when you buy 10). Here's a link to them! (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?
Item=N82E16835150007)
I also have recieved my shipments from PetSolutions and DrFosterSmith.
Also, I've done some work on the stand! I've got the front on in (minus the door) and both sides. I've started standing it and putting wood filler in the cracks as well. Its coming together nicely. I just need to figure out how i want to do the shelving inside it, and put the back, bottom and top on it. Then, I'll get the door on it, and get it stained / polyed. I hope to have it done by Dec 16th. I'm out of town this week, so I'm not able to make much progress on it.

UPDATE, UPDATE, UPDATE!!!
Alright, I know its been over a week, but I was outta town last week!
I've mainly been working on the stand. Its nearly ready to be stained. The canopy, I'll start next. I've also ordered and recieved a 19 piece hole saw set off of ebay for 10 bucks. Can't beat that! The last thing I've done was paint the back of my tank black. Simple, but still progress!

I was gonna wait and do a Bigger update, but I figured I would keep it smaller.
The holidays slowed me down, alot, but Now, I'm back rolling again. The stand is 85% done.
The canopy is also nearing completion! I lost about an inch of head room in it due to miscuts and lack of wood to redo it, but I still should have about 5 inches between the bulbs and the water surface. I think that will be okay, especially with the amount of air I'm going to have moving in this bad boy!
Enough rambling... Here's the's pix!

Alright, I've decided to add a sump into the mix here. I'm thinkin a diy 20gal sump.
I've ordered a hotb 600gph overflow with a lift pump to keep the syphon in tact.
I need to place a dry goods order for an aqualifter (for teh ATO), a return pump, some epoxy for aquascaping, and possibly a pair of bulkheads, and a second pump for a CLM that I'm considering.
What I'm not sure on is which pumps should I go with for the return and the CLM? I was thinking either mag 5/7s or quiet one 3000s. What do you all think?

dr fosters &smith treated me realy good and have good prices aqulift pump is only $10.ooand my 5 gal of instant ocean was only $29.49.......the more you order shipping gets cheaper

Alright! Another small update! I placed the drygoods order mentioned above, after talking to greg and dave (dakar). I ordered a Quiet One 1200 for the return from the sump, and a Quiet One 3000 for a Closed loop. I also picked up a pair of 1" bulkheads, and some epoxy for my rock scaping. I picked up an aqualifter pump for my ATO as well.
Yesterday, I found a VERY well priced LFS who also provides great customer service. By far the best one yet. I ordered an additonal Aqualifter from them for the overflow box, as well as 2 x 20lb bags of sugar-fine aragronite sand. I just didnt' want to deal with a diatom bloom that has the possibality of re-occuring. They also sell LR at $5.00 / lb and also offer "white rock" that is in the same tank as the LR, so its already beginning to get coraline on it, and that is $3.00 / lb. I may buy 1/2 and 1/2 or 3/4 of LR and 1/4 white.
I then, found ANOTHER LFS that opened up last month that has a very nice livestock selection. I picked up my sump tank from them (20g high). I'll be back there as well.
From there, I went to home depot and got all of the PVC fittings (valves, elbows, and T's) for the CLM, return lines, and overflow drain. I also grabbed a 3'x4' piece of 1/4" thick acrylic for the sump as well as a piece of egg crate, and some LocTite - aquarium safe silicon, and some pvc cement.
So, I've created alot more work for the project, but it should be a fun, learning experience and I'm really lookin foward to it. I hope to get to work on it tonight.
Here's a pice of my sump design!

Over the past 2 days, I've gotten a lil more done! The canopy is coming along well. I've gotten all of the fans in place and wired up. Then, last night, I started putting in the endcaps for the T5 lights. I got 3 of the 4 sets of those put in place and the wires ran. I've also gotten some more coats of stain on both the canopy and door. I've also gotten my first coat of poly on the stand itself, both inside and out!
I've recieved my pumps, epoxy, overflow box, and bulkheads. One of the bulkheads came without a nut, so I called pet solutions and they're sending out a whole new one! Now, I just need to find a nut somewhere to fit the other bulkhead so I'll have an extra.
Yesterday, I went to Home Depot, and last night, I went to Lowes! I picked up some cool stuff at both places. Including:
digital mulitmeter,
140-tooth sawblade for cutting my acrylic for the sump,
2 diamond-tipped dremel-tool bits for cutting the hole for the CLM,
some waterproof wire nuts,
3 GFCI outlets,
water-proof boxes and faceplates for those,
some 1/2" flex tubing to feed the boxes to help keep the water out,
more cheese cloth for staining
3/4" cable clamps.

- How do you all attach your plumbing to your bulkheads? Screw on? With Teflon tape?

Alright, I've got some questions...
Tomorrow, I'm going to try to plumb my CLM...

Yup, a krylon spray bomb works just fine (aka spry paint)
- How do you all attach your plumbing to your bulkheads? Screw on? With Teflon tape?
Exactly, just be careful not to apply any bending or sideways forces (from side to side) to the bulkhead or glass or it will break and destroy your hard work. Not sure of the best way to explain it, just look at the bulkhead from straight on and you will understand how it will ruin your whole day if you apply pressure to one side or the other... think I still have a few tanks that I destroyed depicting this quite well.
- Sump pieces... Can I Sylicone (sp) two pieces of acrylic together at a corner in an " L " shape? I can't find any weldon locally.
Weld-on, is generally only found at a platics dealer (or order online from USPlastics) but it sounds like you are making a crash chamber, silicone should work okay. Just rough up the areas to be joined with sandpaper (60 grit would work well) This will add a little more surface area for the silicone to adhere to and improve the overall strength of the bond.
Hope this helps!

I should have an update for everyone later tonight... But, for now, I just have questions!!! Thanks ahead of time for answering! And, sorry for the length!
Equipment:
- Titanium heaters.... Are they a must?
- Circulation in a fuge... what do you all reccommend? (it will be about 7 gallons - 12x11.5x12)
- ATO resivoir placement... Is there any issues with it being above the sump? (I'm going to have an aqualifter attached to a dual float switch)
- Does anyone know how deep of water the Coralife 65gal superskimmer operates best in?
- PVC connections to pumps... What is the best way to do it?
- PVC connections to bulkheads... What is the best way?
- Overflow drain pipes... Is there an issue with putting T's or 90 degree Elbows on these? (I don't have access to flex pvc.)
- New equipment (PH's, pumps, heaters, Skimmers, etc...) what's the best way to break these in, and should you clean them before you start using them in "production" in your tank (if so, how?)....?
- When doing a full-blown wet test of the whole system, is RO water nessicary or reccommended?
________________________________________
Live Stock:
- I plan on having a DSB of 3-4" in my fuge, should I put any type of clean-up crew in the fuge as well?
- When should I introduce the clean-up crew?
- At what point should I add in cheato to my fuge? (before cycle, after, during?)
________________________________________
LRock, Sand
- I've got some carib sea sugar-fine dry sand coming, do I need to wash this stuff before putting it into the tank?
- If the LR I buy is cured, is there any need to wash it before I put it in my tank?
________________________________________
Filtration
- Carbon - Would it be good to drop the bags of it in my aquaclear 70 that I can attatch to my sump instead of just putting it directly into my sump. This way, I can maintain the flow going through it more easily.
BTW... I've been told by several people now that carbon really loses its effectiveness after 24-48 hours. And, after that, its basically a bacteria farm.
- Should I run a mechanical filter of some sorts during the cycle process?

I think this is it for now! LOL.. Thanks again for taking the time!

Here we gooooo!!!
I've gotten some more construction done! I've gotten the door put on the stand. As well as cut out the last of the wood I'll need for the canopy front and sides and gotten 2 coats of stain on those. I've also gotten my first coat of poly on the canopy. Last night, I installed the first stage of my power center.
Also, I put the first 2 pieces of acrylic in the sump tank. They were secured with Silicone 1. I Learned last night just how big of a pain it is to work with silicone in a confined area such as an aquarium... I made a huge mess with it, and haven't even gotten to some of the real tight areas, yet.
So, if you all know a good method to securing these baffels with silicone, by all means, please enlighten me!!!

Hate to burst your bubble bud but in case you didn't know silicone does not stick well to acrylic. You may or may not have problems with those baffles staying in place.
perpetual98
01-18-2007, 10:12 AM
Don't worry about the silicone not sticking to acrylic. It'll be fine. It's one of my biggest pet peeves on message boards when people tell others that they need to use glass baffles because silicone doesn't stick to acrylic. I've made sumps with acrylic baffles and I can pick up the sump by the baffles. Since almost all of the pressure is horizontal pressure, having a good bead of silicone on the glass holding the acrylic in place is just fine seeing as it's lateral forces acting on the baffles.
In a nutshell, don't worry about it.
Eric
Iconz
01-18-2007, 10:15 AM
No, I knew it didn't stick the best, but I figured itd stick well enough.
Eric, you tried the epdm, didn't you? Would that work okay for my middle baffle of the bubble trap? I think getting it sliliconed properly in a 1" space will be a PAIN!!!
perpetual98
01-18-2007, 10:20 AM
Yeah, I used the EPDM. It works pretty slick. I should have made the baffles a TINY bit bigger though to apply more pressure. I ended up bracing them with some egg-crate to make sure that it didn't collapse, kind of a just-in-case thing.
You could try it for your middle baffle. Another thing that I like to do (and that I did on the last couple sumps I made) is attach some "spacers" to the middle baffle. Makes sure that your baffles are spaced correctly.
Here's a picture of my "spacers". They ensure that the baffles are 1.25" apart, and one side also holds the center baffle 1.25" off of the floor of the sump...

Haha, so today, like Greg, was manifold day for me!!! I completed the plumbing and placement of my CLM!!!!
I learned something today. A wet-test is just that WET!!! I got soaked!!! LOL.
I ended up not being able to put the CL pump right behind the tank. So, I had to put it just inside the stand and plumb it from the blukhead and then back over the top.
For the bulkhead. I ran a T off of it in case I needed to set up an external Dorso... I ended up not needing one. This is where I got wet. I filled up the tank, without extending the open top of the T to be above the water line... Dumb justin! I fixed that by cutting a piece of pvc and sticking it in there for the test. I later capped it with some plastic and a zip-tie... All was well.
The bulkhead did have a slow drip from it. I tightened it up some with a wrench.. That helped alot. At this point, i'm too scared to tighten it up anymore! lol
For the Loop - It is not pvc-cemented at all. Its just zip-tied to the black tank trim using releaseable zip-ties. It is spray-painted with Krylon Fusion.
The pump intake... 1" Bulkhead > sm. pc. of firm pvc > 1" T > 1" spa flex hose > union joint w/ built in ball valve > sm pc of firm pvc > female slip / female threaded adapter > pump.
The pump output > pump > female threaded / female slip adapter > sm pc of firm pvc > union joint > spa flex.
Flow observation - I noticed that the outlets aren't all putting out the same amount of water. I figure this will just add to the chaos of the flow. I also noticed that only about 1/2 of each outlet actually has water coming out. Either the top half, right half, left, bottom... You'll see in the pix.
Pump - Its pretty quiet. No cavitation or flushing noise as long as the T coming off of the bulkhead is sealed tight. The plumbing could actually handle a bigger pump.
BTW the water used was cold, fresh water. Not SW.
And here are the pix... The nozzle pix are in order clockwise starting from the input T.... ENJOY!!

Well.. after looking it over and doing some math, I think I may be short on flow...
Here's some facts and numbers, and you all tell me what you think.
- I don't plan on this being an SPS tank, at least not for a while.
- I'm estimating a combined sump/display water volume of about 35g.
- My CLM is made of 1" PVC, and has 6 x 3/4" outlets.
- Right now, with the Q.O. 3000, on the closed loop, according to a head loss calculator, I'm lookin at 600gph.
- Right now, I have a Q.O. 1200 for my return pump. (I've already been debating upgrading this to a 3000.) This pump will give me about 170gph after head loss.
- My HOTB overflow is rated at 600gph...
Options:
Return pumps - GPH (after head loss) - GPH (at 0 head loss)
A - Q.O. 1200 170gph (~5x) 296gph
B - Q.O. 3000 520gph (14x) 780gph - If i used this option, I have to consider how high the turnover rate would be in the sump.
Closed Loop Pumps - GPH - GPH (at 0 head loss)
C - Q.O. 3000 600gph (17x) 780gph (22x)
D - Q.O. 4000 700gph (20x) 1017gph (29x)
A + C = 22x
A + D = 25x
B + C = 31x
B + D = 34x
I do have 2, maxi jet 900's that I can use to circulate water through the rock work. I don't think I want 2 cords going into the tank, but I can see where using one of these could/would be beneifical.
E- MJ 900 - 230gph (6.5x) (un-modded).
F - Whatever other options you all can sugguest!
Also, I'm not 100% confident that the head-loss calculator I used is that reliable. So, I listed the gph of each pump at 0 head loss.
I'm also not even sure I should be factoring in head loss when it comes to a CLM setup..
Thanks for looking!

Small update...
Last night, I broke out my weldon #4 and put my first 2 pieces together... It was an experience. I think I finnaly got it, though!
a also looked at fitting in the last 3 dividing pieces of sump in place, and noticed that I've slightly miscalculated. I didn't allow for baffle width in my bubble trap spacing. So, I'm left with only 1.5" of space between the outer and the inner baffles!... .5" short! Plus the width of the middle baffle! = .75" short! So, I've got a question!
Will water flow okay with only about .5" spacing between the baffles?
I hope so!

Alright!!!! HERE WE GO!!!!!! This is THE week! Full force water test!!!
Saturday, I got ALOT done! (pics later tonight!)
Here's what all I got done:
- I have the hood attached to the supporting back posts. (pics will explain)
- got the front ("door") of the hood attached and hinged.
- put the handle on the main stand door.
- The last pieces of the sump are in place. It is now complete!
- installed some wire management pieces in the stand.
- wired up one of the 2 ballasts, and put it in its final Location.
- installed my Internal Stand GFCI plugs.
I really dont have much left to do. Everything left, is small. Here's that list:
- Install the light for the fuge.
- Plumb the overflow line, and the return.
- Wire the last ballast
- Setup the ATO system.
- buy some LR
- Get 1 cocktail shrimp! :)
I should have the system in working condition by tomorrow! And, in its final resting place and wet by wednesday!!!!! Wish me luck!

Alright, like Bob, I'm done!!!! (I think) The only part left is to find an ATO resivoir and put it in place, and to put a guard on the CLM feed bulkhead.... Here are the Finalized pics!!! Please, be honest and tell me what ya think. All opinions positive, or negative are good, trust me!

I wired these 3 GFCI outlets in parallel. So that if one trips, it doesn't cut power to the others.

IMO One Moonlight will be more than sufficient for your tank. I have 3 on a 55gallon and its alot, your going to have 4 on a 20?
I also think one powerhead will be sufficient too.
You might be over doing it with the Moonlights. Moonlights should be very low to the point that you can't really tell if they are on for sure. In the sea just about all of the really heavy coral real live ends at about 40 to 45 feet. You may see a big difference in your corals if you lower the Moonlighting down and then watch them open up to feed.
